Summary

The Sunday Times number one best seller, from the author of Cloud Atlas and The Bone Clocks.

Longlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2010.

Be transported to a place like no other: a tiny, man-made island in the bay of Nagasaki, for 200 years the sole gateway between Japan and the West. Here, in the dying days of the 18th century, a young Dutch clerk arrives to make his fortune. Instead he loses his heart.

Step onto the streets of Dejima and mingle with scheming traders, spies, interpreters, servants and concubines as two cultures converge. In a tale of integrity and corruption, passion and power, the key is control - of riches and minds and over death itself.

A Beautiful Moving Piece of Historic Art

This was an impactfull story, it left me in awe and melancholic about life in general. Beautifully written. Bringing forward a historically accurate time, now passed. A Jewel on the shelf.

Beautiful words tell a fantastic story

at times gripping at other times a fantastic insight into Dutch and Japanese history.

an excellent fantastical realism.

The narrator does a great job of conveying the different characters distinctly. The plot is intriguing.

Spellbinding.

This is a fabulous book. The story is as harsh and unyielding as the times the cover. But it is also about love and honour and honesty.
A long book but I was sad when it ended.

I liked the idea and the setting

well written, though slightly long-winded in places. I appreciated the glimpse into Dutch and Japanese culture. The timeline was neat and well crafted. Not a fave, but a good book

One of Mitchell’s most masterful

Mitchell is a masterful writer and in this he surpasses even himself. A few slow parts in the narrative that then take shocking revelations and make the reader’s investment well worthwhile!

Magnificent Jacob de Zoet

Extraordinary recreation of the non-European world. Missed a written dramatis personae and Japanese-Dutch language detail. Thanks.
