Summary

Trusted surgeon. Loving wife. Murderer?

Before my world came crashing down, I had it all. The successful career I dreamed of. The beautiful red-brick home where I could relax in front of the fire. The handsome, devoted husband whose blue eyes and charming smile always made me feel safe.

As I call time of death, my voice is steady. My colleagues stand hushed around me, their eyes on me, confused, concerned.

I have never lost a patient until today.

My hands tremble inside their gloves. I slide down the cold tiled walls, my heart racing in my chest.

I have never hated a patient until today.

But what choice did I have, once I recognized him?

And what will I do to protect myself, if someone learns the truth?

A totally gripping psychological thriller that will have you gasping for breath until the final jaw-dropping twist. If you love Freida McFadden, Shari Lapena, and The Girl on the Train, you won’t be able to pause this.

Couldn't keep going

The narration is terrible, listened to many books, this has to be by far the worst. I tried until chapter 5. Very disappointed.

Couldn’t finish the book.

I’m sure the story is good but the narration is awful. I only managed to chapter 8 before I gave up.

Strange plot devices but worked

I found this interesting medical read with some of the plot devices a bit strange ie this was the first patient that she ever lost and then goes full blown anxiety re being arrested. The narrator did a really good job of separating out the two voices.

I am glad that I found this author and narrator and will be looking for more b y them.

Great ending, I didn't see that coming!!

Although the book took a little while to get into, once I was it was very enjoyable to listen to.
Very well narrated and written. I'm going to listen to more by this new, to me, author.

Gripping medical crime thriller

‘The Surgeon’ by Leslie Wolfe is a medical/crime thriller that proved to be a highly engaging read that worked well in an audiobook format.

As with most crime and psychological thrillers, I read it ‘cold’ in order to avoid spoilers. However, I will confirm that the Audible description provides a good summary.

With respect to the audiobook, Gwendolyn Druyor has served as narrator on almost 300 titles, including a number by Leslie Wolfe. I felt that she did a good job with this audiobook and I enjoyed the contrast between those chapters told from the viewpoints of its two main characters: Anne and Paula. A change of tone and inflection differentiated between Anne’s sense of service and dedication versus Paula’s nastiness and ambition.

Overall, I found ‘The Surgeon’ a gripping thriller with plenty of twists and turns. It was the kind of book that I found almost impossible to put down and was grateful that listening as an audiobook I didn’t have to.

Very Disappointing

Having had some medical training I was really looking forward to listening to this book. Unfortunately, I knew after the first chapter it was a lightweight, run of the mill ramble about a husband cheating on his wife and a "mystery" that is supposed to be exciting ensues. Supposedly she is a heart surgeon who can't figure out why her husband would always come home from work late smelling like fresh deodorant and old spice cologne! Seriously?? Medically so off and unrealistic. The reader who depicts the surgeon makes her come across as a shy, sit in the corner, whining, emotional and immature woman. Not even close to the personality of a heart surgeon!

This book is an example of why I will never join Audible. 1. A five minute clip is not enough to know if you can put up with the reader for the entire book, especially when different characters are involved 2. there's no out. Once you buy it is yours unless you are a high ranking member of their "club". You are stuck with an expensive purchase that you can't get out of. A rip off that's not for me!

Narration is annoying

The story line is okay. A few events did not seem believable. Couldn’t stand the whining narration.

Narration is whiny

The narrators whiny voice is ruining this for me. I can’t focus on the story line. I even suggested to a friend, he could not finish the audible version either. Same reasons. Apologies to the narrator. I may come back to a physical book after letting this rest. Have the book a 3 star because I can’t finish it via audible.

Terrible narration

I enjoyed the story, but found it difficult to listen to the narrator. She made an accomplished surgeon sound like a pathetic whiny 14 year old.

The narrator sings every word.

The story has potential, but the lady narrating needs a boost of energy. I can't figure out if she is intentionally singing every word or if her speech justo naturally has that quality, vut she almost sounds like she is in pain the entire time. it's not 'listenable' to me, I couldn't keep going, I hope maybe someone would re-record because I love medical thrillers.

The narration killed it

The story wasn't bad but the narrator was painful to listen to. The main character is a thoracic surgeon. I like to listen and read the books. When you read the book you pick up that she has fear about the situation but projects a strong and stoic personality. If you only listen to the story, she sounds like a whiney little child. it's painful to listen to.

Not up to Wolfe’s standards

I read Wolfe’s Kat Sharp series. The protagonist was a very strong woman. That was not true in this book.
The main character was a weak, tearful woman who stilled lived in her childhood home with her mother and husband! The narrator’s voice enhanced the childlike actions and emotions of a child. This narrator should only read kid lit or YA.
