Summary
Watson is dead. Holmes is alone. And Jack is desperate.
Sixteen-year-old Jack Moreno is managing to hold his life together. Barely. After a terrible car accident leaves his father unable to work, Jack makes ends meet by dropping out of school and covering his dad’s custodial shifts at a school for troubled teens, high in the Wasatch Mountains. Everything is going all right until the night Jack finds Sarah Watson—yes, descendant of that Watson—dead.
When the icy but intriguing Holloway Holmes—yes, descendant of that Holmes—learns of Watson’s death, he is determined to discover the killer on his own. But Jack and his father are the prime suspects in the official investigation, and Jack refuses to sit by and wait.
In an uneasy alliance with Holmes, Jack must hurry to learn what really happened to Sarah Watson, which means facing down a Moriarty, unearthing secrets and blackmail, and trying to solve the other murder at the Walker School, one that happened more than 20 years before. Working together is the only way Jack and Holmes might find the killer before he catches up with them, but both boys are keeping secrets of their own—secrets that threaten the fragile trust they’ve managed to build between them.

Enjoyable Story
Enjoyable Story that is well written with likeable characters and good world building. The narration is very good as well.

Great start to a new series from Greg...
🎧🎧🎧 Audio Review 🎧🎧🎧
Was a little uncertain when I saw that Mr T was narrating this series...yes, I 🩷🩷🩷 Mr T but doing 16/17 year old voices 🫣; however, as usual he proved me wrong and narrated beautifully, even Holmes the elder and his posh British accent [not an unnecessary 'r' in sight or should that be sound 🤔, Michael Ferraiuolo take note please]. The only thing I could take slight issue with were the times that errors had obviously been made and the narrated sentence/phrase was re-inserted back into the whole with a different tone. 4.5 stars.

4.5 stars rounded up. Have to say Jack reminded me a lot of what could've been a younger Jem from The Same Breath, Jem and Tean from the Lion and the Lamb series, and not just because of the Utah setting of this particular series. I loved the banter between Jack and Holloway, the snark and the laughs. I did call the creepy villain of the piece correctly BUT I think we may have trouble in future reads with Holmes the elder...what a nasty piece of work he is!! 😡

The Curious Case of Holloway Holmes
I’m a huge Gregory Ashe fan and so was thrilled when this lovely book came up.
Jack is the protagonist in the story – the entire tale is from his point of view. He’s covering for his dad working a janitorial shift at a school for troubled teens when he finds a dead body. Belonging to a student named Sarah Watson.
Now, Jack’s not one who knows how to leave well-enough alone. Plus, he and his dad are suspects. Jack tries to track down Sarah’s killer before he and his dad are railroaded into a prison sentence.
Somehow, as Jack is sifting through the clues, he meets Holloway Holmes. Yes, that Holmes. A descendent of Sherlock. Only, as the investigation unfurls, Jack becomes Holmes’s Watson.
Confused? Yeah, me too. Plus, there’s a Moriarty.
In the end, I hadn’t guessed who the killer was. I hadn’t seen a bunch of things coming, and yet everything made sense. Which is why I love Gregory Ashe’s books.
I also want to say there was a disturbing amount of violence and a lot of angst in this book. Not as much as his other books, but more than I was expecting. I had a writing teacher who used to say ‘what’s the worst thing that can happen to this character? Make it happen. What’s the next worst thing? Make that happen too.’ Seriously, but the end of the book I felt so badly for Jack – because nothing ever went his way. Well, except the very end.
Which has nicely set up the next book, if there is to be one. I can’t imagine what Jack and Holloway will get up to next – but I look forward to finding out.
Greg Tremblay narrated this book and I was thrilled. He has a wide range as a narrator, but I like when he does YA. Anyway, I’m onboard if there are more books to come.

I just love Jack and Holloway!
Greg Tremblay brings jacks voice to life. The pace and infection for each character made this such a joy to listen to. I’ve read the series. Now I’m listening .. I never re read but This series that Gregory Ashe is one of my favourites.. coming so close to Hazard and Somerset and North and Shaw. Jack is kind, funny, strong emotional and brave. His growing love for ‘H’ is a delight to read and now listen to. A mature YA with emotional intimacy that makes you fall in love with these characters. Off to listen to the next book The Old Wheel.

Fantastic!
The Strangest Forms is the first book in The Adventures of Holloway Holmes, a contemporary mystery series with a slowburn romance between Jack, the narrator, and Holloway, a descendent of the famous Sherlock Holmes. Like his famous ancestor, Holloway is incredibly smart, socially awkward, and extremely perceptive. This makes him the perfect foil to Jack, an intelligent, determined and desperate teen who’s just trying to keep his family afloat after a tragic accident.
This book gave me all the emotional feels – both Jack and Holloway have a lot of baggage from traumatic events in their childhoods. Their character growth in the first book was fascinating and worked really well with the interesting murder mystery plot. There was action, intrigue, and plots within plots. I loved the ending and the way that Jack was able to turn the tables to benefit himself at the end and setting up a great starting point for the next book.
The audiobook was narrated by Greg Tremblay who does a fantastic job with the narration. I loved Greg’s narration style and how he was able to move from all the different accents for the characters. He kept the performance entertaining and gripping and had me on the edge of my seat. The audiobook production was well done.

Really engaging story
I very much enjoyed this story. I liked the callbacks to Sherlock Holmes, and the plot kept me engaged and I really liked the narrator., On to book 2!
