Summary

'A fast-paced carnival of setbacks and skullduggery that reminds me of... me! Charming from the first twist to the last' Scott Lynch, author of THE LIES OF LOCKE LAMORA

The first in an extraordinary new fantasy epic, perfect for fans of Nicholas Eames and James Islington!

Lukan Gardova is a cardsharp, academy dropout, and - thanks to a duel that ended badly - the disgraced heir to an ancient noble house. His life consists of cheap wine, rigged card games and wondering how he might win back the life he threw away.

When Lukan discovers that his estranged father has been murdered in strange circumstances, he finds fresh purpose. Deprived of his chance to make amends for his mistakes, he vows to unravel the mystery behind his father's death.

His search for answers leads him to Saphrona, fabled city of merchant princes, where anything can be bought if one has the coin. Lukan only seeks the truth, but instead he finds danger and secrets in every shadow.

For in Saphrona, everything has a price - and the price of truth is the deadliest of all.

Fun but flawed

This was an enjoyable listen great world building, subtle magic system and a murder mystery/ investigation with intrigue which I loved.

The narrator did an excellent job

The biggest flaw in this book were the characters the main one is an idiot, who seems to lack any real skill or talent and he drinks way too much for someone who is supposed to be resolute to his cause or purpose. His lack of maturity is also a problem he has a temper and goes from man with a plan to a man child. The other characters are interesting but lack real depth.
This is a book with great potential let down by its flaws in my opinion

Fun read

Really enjoyed this, was fun with an interesting setting. Well narrated. Felt a good bit like Lies of Locke Lamora so fans of that will probably enjoy this too. Looking forward to the next one now.

You wont regret spending a credit on this one

I do not usually write reviews, but I really thought this novel deserved one and I wanted to give it a shout-out. I am positive that most fantasy readers will enjoy it as much as I did. This is a fantasy story in the tradition of Michael J. Sullivan and Brent Weeks that you do not find often any more here among all the litrpg (which I also enjoy).

It is a classic fantasy story filled with action and the solving of a murder mystery. The main characters are interesting and likeable but not flawless. The world-building is good and the magic is just hovering in the background, not too invasive, a mystery in its self.
