The war is over, but something is rotten in the state of Eidyn.

With a ragged peace in place, demons burn farmlands, violent Reivers roam the wilds and plague has spread beyond the Black Meadows. The country is on its knees.

In a society that fears and shuns him, Aranok is the first magically-skilled draoidh to be named King's Envoy.

Now, charged with restoring an exiled foreign queen to her throne, he leads a group of strangers across the ravaged country. But at every step, a new mystery complicates their mission.

As bodies drop around them, new threats emerge and lies are revealed, can Aranok bring his companions together and uncover the conspiracy that threatens the kingdom?

Strap in for this twisted fantasy road trip from award-winning author Justin Lee Anderson.

excellent story with a great twist

really really enjoyed this one, while I knew there was a twist coming , I didn't figure it out and was quite surprised , really interesting premise, great magic system, excellent characters. the narration was tough to get the hang of. you'd wanna be a familiar with the thickness of a Scottish accent , but once I got used to it the story flowed like a river. dying for the next book

Enjoyable epic fantasy with modern touches

It takes a great book for me to really enjoy the more traditional epic fantasy stories, and The Lost War more than delivered.

While initially it reminded me a little of David Gemmell’s and John Gwynne’s books, I soon started getting some The Last Of Us vibes, too, but it also felt a touch modern due to a few time loops further down the story.

There was a great set of characters, who while cast into a traditional D&D set-up still felt fresh and vibrant. Loved the monsters, too! :)

I look forward to picking up the upcoming instalments of this series.

Enjoyable Fantasy

Good story brilliantly told by Euan Morton. Though I did feel quite a bit of frustration at the main characters decision making. Hopefully with the conclusion of this book things will change and he will have a bit of wit about him in future. Will look forward to the next instalment.

great first book in the series

I read and listened to Justin's debut novel Carpet Diem a while back amd loved it ao was looking forward to this one.

This book is so different from carpet diem though that it could have been written by a completely different author. This isn't a bad thing as it looks like the start of an amazing fantasy epic similar to a lot of old authors I used to read.

I love the way Justin has changed from his comedy fantasy to serious fantasy with ease and the way he has decided to write an epic instead of just a one off really adds to it and shows off his talents.

The world building was brilliant with enough detail at anyone point for you to know where they were but not too much that you get bogged down in all the detail.

The characters are also really well written and Justin has written them in such a way that you are really rooting for them throughout.

Overall this is the start of what looks like a brilliant fantasy series and I can't wait to read the next book when it is released.

much more than it appears

Being Scottish myself, I found the fantasy Caledonian setting and narrators accent very enjoyable. The characters are well fleshed out and the story fairly gallops along. The best thing is, is that while it seems like a slightly tropey, if spirited, fantasy story in the begining, it develops into something else gradually, without you really realising it. Eventually, it's a mystery and a whodunit, and with a plot twist that I for one didn't see coming, although I knew, just knew, that something was amiss. Excellent stuff, I got book 2 before I finished book 1, so the author must be doing something right.
