About this listen

Winner of the 2018 Fantasy Prize and Kindle Storyteller Finalist.

This is one secret he’s keeping to himself. And who would believe him anyway?

Farin, the gravedigger’s son, lives in the medieval village of Heap. The 18-year-old is an outsider who is bullied and ostracized by the villagers. His father has succumbed to a life of drinking, and the young man has no option but to take over the job of gravedigger.

But Farin’s life takes a dramatic twist when the village witch dies. As he prepares her for burial, he finds an amulet hanging around her neck, and he can’t resist trying it on....

An enjoyable beginning to a saga

Great narration and I enjoyed this style of writing with sarcasm and wit. It reminds me of the name of the wind by Patrick Rothfuss

Loved this!

I started listening to this as a stop gap after listening to the Warringham Chronicles, I was bereft when I came to the end of that and needed something very different to break the spell I had been under. This worked 100% and now I can’t wait to listen to the rest. This story is well written and well told, down to earth language, interesting believable characters and quite funny. Great escapism!

Really Enjoyable.

This story starts off rather different from most fantasy stories and although towards the end it falls back in line with the traditional narrative you might expect it is still entertaining and interesting enough to hook me into getting the next book.

Lighthearted escapism

The jokes were a bit relentless and the plot perhaps a bit too neat and predictable, but overall an easy, enjoyable and likeable listen. The reader was good but very slow, fine though when I increased the narration speed.

not bad

easy listen and we'll narrated story but there's no conclusion to the story so it's more of a freebie teaser with four books following that go for £7.99, crafty!

Loved it all

A strange and funny story that tikkles you through the trauma. The characters are well thought out and relatable and the story unfolds at a good pace. The performer is exceptional with great range. A good sold 8/10

A bit violent, but very good

I am thoroughly enjoying this book. I really enjoy the narrator. The dry sense of humor and the sarcasm is laugh-out-loud funny in parts and the story keeps you guessing. It is important to note that this is the first book in a series and as such one must expect some things to be left over for the other books (Story wise). It is also quite gruesome in places, but I suppose that aught to be expected when gravedigging is involved.

A proper story! stick with it!

I had no idea what to expect with this book, as I didn't read any reviews. The performance was brilliant, the different voices the reader puts on is really fantastic! I will definitely get the next book. A 'proper story' in a strange land, you really feel like you're there. Really easy to listen to and just get sucked in!
