Summary

While Lady Angeline Dudley’s pedigree dictates that she must land a titled gentleman, the irrepressible beauty secretly longs for a simple, ordinary suitor. No wild rakes like the men of her family, just a kind heart and good nature. So when Edward Ailsbury, the new Earl of Heyward, rescues her with unmatched civility from the advances of a scoundrel, Angeline thinks that she has found her true love. Persuading the earl is another matter entirely.

Edward has his future neatly mapped out. He hopes to wed his steadfast companion, a woman who shares his values of loyalty, respect, and decorum. But arriving in London to take his seat in the House of Lords, he is derailed by Angeline, an exquisite bird of paradise seemingly devoted to sending his predictable life into chaos.

From the brilliant hues of her fashion to her hoydenish antics, Angeline is the last woman on earth for Edward. And yet a stolen kiss in the moonlight awakens something deep and primal within him. Naturally, being a gentleman, he does the right thing after compromising a lady: He offers marriage.

Angeline knows that Edward’s proposal is born of duty, not love. But denying something so provocative and passionate is easier said than done. Deep down, Angeline believes that Edward’s dedication to convention will melt behind closed doors, where sensuality and seduction play wicked games. For a proper wife by day can become a husband’s secret mistress by night, when delicious desire rules.

A lovely romance with a funny side

This book tells the story of Lady Angeline Dudley and Edward Ailsbury, the new Earl of Heyward, and is the third book in the Mistress Series by Mary Balogh. I had already read the first two books in the series so thought that I would give this one a try and readily downloaded it onto my kindle. It was an extremely pleasant surprise, and is definitely one of my favourite books by Mary Balogh. While it certainly wasn't her convential romance with a muscled, dashing hell-raiser as the male love interest, I found that actually this book was just as good if not better than her usual fare. Angeline's non-stop chatter and outrageous fashion sense lent a humerous side to the story, and it was really touching to see the sensible, dutiful Edward start to let loose a bit and reveal a more carefree side when in Angeline's presence. Overall I would whole-heartedly recommend the book as a sweet and touching romance.

Ghastly is the only word that comes to mind!

Really like to return this what a waste of a credit the narrator is just “reading” the book her pronounciation of Lady Evangeline’s name is so bad it sounds like her name begins with an “O”!, Story terrible and far too long I must have had windmills in my head downloading this book! What is the point of just reading a book and badly ... there are too many like that on audible one might as well use “Librivox” at least this service is free. Sorry do not mean to cause any grief or upset but just hope it might make authors, audible and everyone involved in putting together an audiobook think everything through with more caution. Thank you.

Different in a good way

Unlike some other reviewers here I loved the fact book 3 in the series went back in time. There were plenty of hints in 1 and 2 that there was more to learn about this relationship and for me that enhanced my enjoyment of 3 when it finally came. These two characters and their relationship are refreshingly different and their story a great way to round off the series. I enjoyed a glimpse back at the two brothers too.

Re the narrator I’m a massive fan of RL and could listen to her narration all day. I had to make myself give this narrator a chance and when I did I not only accepted but ultimately enjoyed her very different style. I felt she really brought Angeline’s character to life (dare I say more realistically than RL in 1 and 2). She made her believable and likeable. I like the way she voiced most of the characters but yes the narration in between does sound a little like a cyber voice in its tone and rhythms at times!

Awful

Gave up after 6 chapters. Story going nowhere and the narrator’s voice grated on my ears.

Not my favourite Balogh!

Unfortunately I found the narrator irritating -much prefer Rosalind Llandor’s narration of Balogh books. Sorry!

Meh! Plus not a good narrator

My least favourite of this trilogy. As others have said, I'm not sure why MG didn't start with this story since she was married first, It was a little annoying knowing what their relationship is from the previous two books! Overall, I felt there was a lot of fluff and nonsense that didn't need to be included, it was at least an hour or more too long!

The sainted Rosalyn Landor, who can read no wrong in my book (to paraphrase that well known saying!), was vastly better at capturing the chatterbox nature of Angeline, in this book she just sounds verbose and long winded!

I don't like to diss people, but I'm afraid this isn't the genre for Anne Flosnik, very slow and ponderous reading. I felt like a child being read to by their mother! Just read in a normal voice/speed! She will go on my Rubbish Readers list, which already includes Heather Wilds, Sue Pitkin and the worst of all Mary Sarah!

Story enjoyable but irritating narration.

I’ve listened to many of Mary’s books. I’ve always enjoyed Rosalind Landor’s performances but this narrator has a very irritating style. It’s almost as if she is attempting an English accent which sounds rather false and laboured. I had to increase the speed to make it bearable.
