About this listen

Bring nature into your home with the uplifting true story of the couple who lost everything and embarked on a journey of salvation across the South West coastline, brought to you by Penguin.

Just days after Raynor Winn learns that Moth, her husband of 32 years, is terminally ill, their home is taken away and they lose their livelihood.

With nothing left and little time, they make the brave and impulsive decision to walk the 630 miles of the sea-swept South West Coast Path.

Carrying only the essentials for survival on their backs, they live wild in the ancient, weathered landscape of cliffs, sea and sky. Yet through every step, their walk becomes a remarkable journey.

The Salt Path is an honest and life-affirming true story of coming to terms with grief and the healing power of the natural world.

Read by author Raynor Winn, this deeply felt, personal tale is a beacon of universal strength.

Critic reviews

"A beautiful, thoughtful, lyrical story of homelessness, human strength and endurance." (Guardian)

"The landscape is magical: shape-shifting seas and smugglers' coves; myriads of sea birds and mauve skies. It's a tale of triumph: of hope over despair; of love over everything." (Sunday Times)

"An astonishing narrative of two people dragging themselves from the depths of despair along some of the most dramatic landscapes in the country and ultimately finding themselves." (Independent)

Simply amazing

A beautiful book. Raynor’s descriptions of everything she sees brings the book to life and I felt like I was walking and wild living with them. I cried at the end purely because I didn’t want to part from them or the path. Highly recommended.

new life, new beginning

To think that, if it hadn’t been for a traitorous friend, a need to defend oneself in court because of a lack of money for a lawyer, even a bad one, a lack of knowledge in the finer points of law and a calour judge this book would never have even been written. it’s a good thing though that it was even though those involved in its writing were put theough the mincer to do it. Written with humour and pathos this truly is a roller coaster read and good from start to finish. If one thing let this book down it would be the performance. Due to a very pronounceed speech impediment some of the words are not all that clear. not ehr fault but maybe if somebody eelse had read it? Then again, if they had would the book have carried quite the same wweight of sincerity? Anyway, that’s what i think of this book. now I’m off to read the sequel.

Inspirational

This is the only word that does this book justice. Losing your home would finish most people off but then the next piece of news for the Winns sets them off on the challenge of a lifetime. Be inspired read/listen to this book it may just change your life forever.

as near perfect as you'll get

A life changing ramble about a life changing ramble.

Read when vulnerable, and open to suggestion. You will not regret it.

A good read slightly spoiled

I found the story engaging, but not the Wikipedia style descriptions of, for example homelessness.

Tale of faith, hope and synchronicity.

An enthralling read. "Impossible" odds did not stop this couple from doing what they could, following their very strange intuitions to and entirely believable and grace-filled end. It's not the inevitable death at the end of every human path that matters...but how we get there.

Very special

To be read by the author of such an amazing hard experience was calming and thought provoking. We oldies should grasp the opportunity should it ever arise. Followed the journey on an App and learned about the south coast.
