Summary
Where did God come from? What do the bible stories really tell us? Who or what was Jesus Christ? This audiobook challenges everything we think we know about the nature of religion:
- The ancient fertility cult at the heart of Christianity.
- The living power of cultic rites and symbols.
- The sacred mushroom as the emblem and embodiment of divinity.
- The secret meaning of biblical myths.
- The language of religion that links us to our ancestors.
The Sacred Mushroom and the Cross sets out John Allegro's quest through a family tree of languages to find the truth about where Christianity came from.

A history of language
I truly enjoy it! The narrator could seem boring for some people but I enjoy that it was read as a factual book and not fiction. As with most audiobooks it is best heard whilst doing something else, for example training or other monotone chores.

Mind blowing
The psychedelic roots of the religion is one of the most interesting topics in my opinion and this book is a piece of the puzzle fer sure.

Hated it,
I was intrigued, but it was a hard listen. Back in early times, everything must have been about the penis, volva and tripping on a mushroom. Disappointing.

Deep knowledge, but weak delivery
The author seems a very accredited and knowledgeably person. But it is a very enduring and complicated read. There’s a deep knowledge in its pages but a weak delivery.
It seems as though even the reader reading the book is at times wondering off into space with a confused ramble of endless babble in a sea of letters and pronunciations. And a lot of penis and vagina talk too. Lol
But I’m happy I read it over all.
Cheers

not what I expected
I had heard about this book from several sources. I find the material difficult to believe. what others think of this is their own opinion, but this was not for me.

Important Context From the Ancient World
This is a deeply fascinating study of translations, word plays, puns, and etymologies from ancient writings, both in and out of the Biblical Canon.

Interesting topic, not good for audio book format
I couldn’t finish the book even though I was really interested in the topic. The presentation of material and the reading of different spelling variations do not translate in audio format.

Probably a better read than listen.
Difficult book to listen to for me. Much of the book used translations that were difficult to follow audibly. Premise of the book was interesting though.

Thick
I found this book very difficult to appreciate. In fact, it's one of very few that I laid aside as not worth my attention. Tedious and redundant.
