Summary
From New York Times best-selling authors Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward comes a new stand-alone romance.
Rule number one for dating your best friend’s sister: Don’t.
Just don’t do it.
Especially when your best friend is dead and the last thing he made you promise him was that you’d keep an eye on his little sister, but not too good of an eye.
As a musician whose longest committed relationship was six weeks, I, Holden Catalano, was the last guy on Earth who should’ve been messing around with Laney Ellison.
The super smart girl whom I affectionately dubbed Lala since childhood was always off-limits.
Though that didn’t stop me from thinking about her over the years, especially those times when the two of us would sneak out onto the roof and talk for hours after my buddy fell asleep. It was innocent, but I’d always held a torch for her.
After Ryan passed away, I vowed to always protect Lala. That included protecting her—from me.
Now all grown up and a scientist, Lala needed a place to stay when she accepted a temporary research position in New York. I thought I did the right thing by offering her an apartment in the building I co-owned with my three friends.
Except having her close by reignited all of those old feelings.
And things started to get complicated.
Especially since she was engaged.
And especially since, lately, I’d noticed something more in her eyes. Desire.
Lala didn’t exactly look at me like the platonic brother figure I was trying so desperately to be, even though I wanted her more than I’d ever wanted anything.
Yet, I was being good—on my very best behavior.
But you know what they say...all good things must come to an end, right?

The Diamond Duo write another gem but better and hotter than the rest!
I have loved all of Vi and Penelope’s books, but this is definitely their best yet. It will take you on a massive emotional journey you won’t want a break from, for even a minute. It’s full of laughs, longing, lust, sadness, hope and molten hot steamy sex. I won’t write any spoilers other than be prepared to fall in love with Holden. Thank you Vi and Penelope. Can’t wait til your next book.

Not for me
I struggled to finish this story. The plot didn't feel like a 'slow burn'. The pace was off and didn't seem to flow. I lost motivation to get halfway through.
The Laney & Holden do have a back story, yes. The chemistry in the present doesn't seem to be there. It's angst and moodiness, then sex that becomes very adventurous, very quickly. It's annoying. The pet name 'Lala' grated on me rapidly.
Men who wear beanies are not sexy. The guy on the cover is handsome but not with that hair and beanie. This thought would occur to me whenever the main female lead would describe this guy in 'top shelf' handsome terms. Well, not in a beanie, no. This story isn't for me.

Fabulous listening
I adored this story so much.
Brother's best friend AND a manwhore? Yes, please!
The tension between Lala and Holden was exquisite.
Their friendly banter, their longing glances, their easy camaraderie...it was all just perfectly balanced.
I knew once they took the plunge it would be game over for Holden. How could it not be?
He worshipped the ground Laney walked on.
And the best surprise was how everything finally came together at the end.
Listening to Teddy and Andi narrate this story was no hardship at all, they did a marvellous job of bringing the story to life.

Loved this second installment ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I absolutely loved Colby & Billie's story in 'The Rules of Dating', so I was very excited to discover a second book - this time Holden & Laney's (Lala's) story. Loved this one too! Excellent writing and two of my absolute favourite narrators - how could I not love it!
I'm now excited for the future stories of how the other two friends - Owen & Braydon find the loves of their lives 😊
Although this book could be listened to as a standalone, I'd recommend listening to 'The Rules of Dating' first, as that's where the story arc starts.

FRIENDS▪️FORBIDDEN▪️FORCED PROXIMITY.. & FIREWORKS
They were forbidden and friends but opposites before they were lovers. Scientist Lala was engaged, settled and in need of stability and roots before it all started. And sex-on-a-stick Holden was a f’boy drummer with a heart of gold in a band on its way up. What on earth could possibly go wrong.. or maybe, just maybe, right? Lala wasn’t a heroine I particularly liked initially with her doubts, her hidden hesitation and her secrets. However, I loved loved loved everything about Holden who was prepared to give up his Player ways, speak sincerely and honestly and give their relationship one hundred percent of everything he had (which btw, was plenty.. and wow, hot 🤭🥰). How could it work you say?.. well, with well-written chapters of character growth, chemistry and the charm of secondary characters of course.
Worth a credit? Yes. Ms Ward and Ms Keeland - wow, that’s a mega-mighty talented writing partnership. Teddy and Andi - wow again, a pair of perfect narrators who delivered big. And an entertaining slow-burn-to-scorching rollercoaster relationship of layered emotions, wit, banter, lust, steamy sex, warmth, tenderness and love. Which all spun, circled and culminated into a very enjoyable listen.. especially when Teddy and Andi are expertly bringing all the full-bodied feels to life😉.

Hated it.
This was the worst story I’ve listen to in a long time. Aside from the cheating, so much of it just wasn’t believable. I usually enjoy these authors, but I’m not blindly in love with their writing. I will think twice before spending a credit on one of their books in the future.

it’s bad. no story at all. sex-based only.
very flat characters,
their interest in each other is only about sex.
very shallow book.
disappointing.

THIS IS A MASTERPIECE ❤️🔥🌶️🦋❤️🔥
One of the best I’ve read in a long time. A nice paced but well tempo-ed slow burn. And when it gets spicy it hits and explodes from there! 10/10

o.m.g. !! ❤️
ok...I just finished this and just wow! I started it yesterday and didn't want to put it down! I loved the plot, characters and more than once got emotional. I won't include any spoilers but yes...I had tears running down my face at the end.
Now I'm going to go buy every single book Vi and Penelope have written. Definitely the best book I've read this year- (144 so far). I can't recommend this one enough...Can't imagine anyone with legit criticism I'd agree with. The narration was great too! Definitely buy this one!

slow, boring, frustrating
took 17 chapters for the "slow burn" to unfurl. then the typical uncertainty about their love for each other. save your credit

Disappointing
I usually love books from Penelope Ward and Vi Keeland. But this one was a huge disappointment. First, the cheating. Even without physically cheating, Lala cheated nonetheless. The story was boring, I would even skip some parts, which I not usually would do. And I also missed a plot twist, which most of the books from Penelope and Vi do have. Not really worth 1 credit.
