According to mythology, mankind used to live in 'The Tranquiline Halls': heaven. But then the Voidbringers assaulted and captured heaven, casting out God and men. Men took root on Roshar, the world of storms, but the Voidbringers followed. The Almighty gave men powerful suits of armor and mystical weapons, the Shardblades. Led by 10 angelic Heralds and 10 orders of knights known as Radiants, mankind finally won (or so the legends say).

Summary
The instant Sunday Times best seller from the author of The Flatshare
Addie and her sister are about to embark on an epic road trip to a friend's wedding in rural Scotland. The playlist is all planned and the snacks are packed.
But, not long after setting off, a car slams into the back of theirs. The driver is none other than Addie's ex, Dylan, who she's avoided since their traumatic break-up two years earlier.
Dylan and his best mate are heading to the wedding too and they've totalled their car so Addie has no choice but to offer them a ride. The car is soon jam-packed full of luggage and secrets, and with four-hundred miles ahead of them, Dylan and Addie can't avoid confronting the very messy history of their relationship....
Will they make it to the wedding on time? And, more importantly, is this really the end of the road for Addie and Dylan?

Utter drivel
I've always been told 'If you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all,. So I won't bang on about this book needless to say that after reading Beth O'Leary's prior books I awaited the latest with bated breath. I did what I call a 'Mastermind' on this book, I've started so I'll finish, in the hope, something would happen, it didn't. So if I save just one person from this tiresome story, my job will be done.

Struggled to finish.
Irritating predictable characters: the troubled posh boy, the geeky office weirdo, the rough and ready lorry driver and the bolshy but supportive sister. Half way through i went back on audible to see if I had bought something from the teen fiction section by mistake!

Generally bad
*sort of spoiler, but also very obvious*
I've never been one for rekindled romances. You break up for a reason that doesn't magically disappear. But what I really hated was that mental illness was used to develop the plotline without any substance or even minor understanding. And not just one form of illness, but an entire DSM was needed to keep the story going. I also dislike how O'Leary creates love triangles, but it's very clear who we are supposed to root for. The other guy is simply there as a puff piece, but never a real option, lest we actually begin to root for the other team.

Miscast narrators
Why does the “posh boy” have a normal voice, and the “normal girl” a really clipped, posh accent? I found her miscast voice very irritating and nearly returned the book because of it.
The story was ok but not as enjoyable as The Flat Share or The Switch.

I recommend this book
Beth O'Leary is one of those authors that can just rope you into the story, with ease, humour and a tangle of emotions. This story did not disappoint in those areas. whilst I agree with some of the other reviews, that this is not her best book, I wholeheartedly disagree with those saying that this book is bad. this book takes a 2 day journey and turns into hours of listening, romance, frustration, admiration, and a whole catalogue of other feelings. Both voice actors were very pleasant to listen to too. Please give this book a try.

Even the scenic route would be less frustrating.
The narrative is split but I found 'Then' to be nauseatingly fawning and irritatingly reflective to the point of long winded dissection of feelings that embodied all things stereotypically millennial. The 'Now' narrative is frustrating and implausible ...a journey that lingers on. Characters are reasonably well penned but the storyline is weak and the dialogue predictable and at times cliche. Such a shame as I thoroughly enjoyed, The Flat Share but feel this novel was born from lockdown and stagnated accordingly.

I absolutely LOVED Beth's first two books but this one drove me insane. Just not a great storyline. Absolutely wonderful audio book performance - main reason I finished the book haha.
