Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

The new pulse-pounding thriller from the best-selling author of The Memory Wood: beautifully written, evocative and dramatic, you will listen to it with your heart in your mouth.

How did it come to this?

The news doesn't strike cleanly, like a guillotine's blade. Nothing so merciful. This news is a slovenly traveller, dragging its feet, gradually revealing its horrors. And it announces itself first with violence - the urgent hammering of fists on the front door.

Life can change in a heartbeat.

Lucy has everything she could wish for: a beautiful home high on the clifftops above the Devon coast, a devoted husband and two beloved children.

Then one morning, time stops. Their family yacht is recovered, abandoned far out at sea. Lucy's husband is nowhere to be found, and as the seconds tick by, she begins to wonder - what if he was the one who took the boat? And if so, where is he now?

As a once-in-a-generation storm frustrates the rescue operation, Lucy pieces together what happened on board. And then she makes a fresh discovery. One that plunges her into a nightmare more shocking than any she could ever have imagined....

Twists and turns. Thrilling

This was fantastic. Believable? Possibly not. Thrilling. Most definitely. It was such a gripping story. Narrator is great too.

a gripping, fast moving thriller but ...

I did enjoy this book, it certainly made me want to keep on listening but my overall feeling now I've finished it is that it is quite depressing. I would, however, keep my eye out for more titles by this author.

Engaging thriller

A thoroughly absorbing thriller, right up to the point where the perpetrator and their motivation are revealed - bit of a trope and very shaky reason to do what they did. Still, extremely enjoyable and engaging. Beautifully written.

Not recommended

I did not like this book. It was an unpleasant story with unlikeable characters. The narration was not good with long pauses in the wrong places. Altogether a real disappointment.

Disappointing

I had high hopes for this book, but I just couldn't get into it; characters were flat and a slow pace to the plot. Then the description of a fat character was so cruel and unnecessary, as a fat person myself, it really put me off. Sam Lloyd, my necklace of chins was quivering in indignation. I listened for a bit longer, but I had to give up. I'm sure the author would have something to say about me giving up on being slim too...
