About this listen
Mark Randall lay dead in a field near Lowacre long before Smith had done what he had to do in Belfast. By the time he went back to work, the investigation was well underway. "It's not my case," he says more than once, and he really doesn't need it to be; he has enough to think about as it is. But going around the Norfolk countryside dotting the i's and crossing the t's, speaking to the local farmers and the Brothers of St. Francis from Abbeyfields, Smith begins to suspect that the investigation might be heading in entirely the wrong direction. Arrests are made, charges are brought, and Christopher Waters asks Smith if he has ever seen the wrong man convicted in a murder case. The answer is yes, and the next question is, what can be done to prevent it from happening again?

another great DC smith novel
Peter Granger makes DC Smith come alive as a wonderfully pedantic and brilliantly insightful detective

Another gently unfolding tale
I love the variety of situations D.C. has to deal with. Unfailingly honest and comitted, he has more hassle with his colleagues than the suspects. Delightfully gentle and humourous, it is such a refreshing change from the blood and guts detective stories that are so numerous, relying on violence rather than engaging characters and skillfull writing to entertain. Long may D.C. reign, and long may Gidart Jackson bring him to life.

Great listen
Really love the way these books are written and the perfect narrative. Sadly I feel these books are coming to an end so will make the most of them and find other Peter Grainger books

bloody marvellous!
Really hard to fault any of the books in this series so far .All of the have been original and very different. The characters have been more solid with each book . Some parts are really funny and the feeling of sadness from DC runs through every book. ONTO THE NEXT

Continuity from previous book.
I enjoyed this, but not nearly as much as the previous one. It felt rather like a link between an engrossing previous story and hopefully another more thrilling following one. The fact that DC wasn’t properly involved in the investigation made it seem less engaging. Looking forward to the next in the series.

"Old habits die hard."
Smith returns to the station following his knee operation and time spent back in Belfast, to find a murder enquiry stalled after it's initial ten days: the body of a detectorist had been discovered, head crushed from behind, in a field adjacent to a friary. Although not his case, Smith investigates anyway but is still somewhat distracted by his time away, and memories.
As usual, simply superb. These DC Smith books just keep getting better - and they were already good from the very beginning. It is the man the reader gets to know that makes the series so involving. Well written, Smith's comp!ex character slowly emerges revealing more of this intelligent, witty man as well as unravelling the complex cases.
Available as a free download via Audible Plus for just a few more days, I can wholeheartedly recommend this book and those which went before, and which has rapidly becoming my favourite detective series.
Oh, a d did I mention generator Gildart Jackson performs as Smith superbly?
Now on to book no.7.
