Summary

Recently widowed Venetia Hamilton Hargreaves is left with a huge house, a bank balance to match and an uneasy feeling that she's been sleepwalking through the last fifty years. Determined to live fully again, she embraces life with an enthusiasm and purpose she'd forgotten she could muster.

Buying the dilapidated Phoenix Ballroom and with it a drop-in centre and spiritualist church could be seen as reckless, but Venetia's generosity, courage and kindness provide a refuge for a touching cast of damaged and lonely people who find their chosen family. As their stories intertwine, long buried secrets are revealed, missed opportunities seized and lives are renewed as the Phoenix lives up to its name.

The Phoenix Ballroom is a story of hope and second chances across the generations.

It’s a ‘10’ from me

So much of this story brought me straight back to my childhood. Having competed at The Winter Gardens in Blackpool I was straight back to the glitter & sequins & the magic of it all.
Such loveable characters created by Ruth Hogan. Secrets & surprises twist the plot around the ballroom with elegant nostalgic descriptions. Beautiful

Another treat from Ruth Hogan

You can’t fail with a Ruth Hogan book. As always such special characters that you will fall in love with. The story was gripping from the start and I didn’t expect the twists.

So good - Ruth creates the most amazing characters

All of Ruth's character's have flaws but that is why we love them. The story as always is more about the people, the characters and less about the ballroom. Joan Walker's narration is super and helps really bring the characters to life. Only problem for me is that I read it too quickly and Ruth Hogan doesn't write novels fast enough for another one to be ready as soon as I finished this one.

sing song lilting narration which detracted from the story...

sadly couldn't finish listening to this audio book as I found the sing song narration, such a shame as I really like this author but I will have to actually read the now...

Nice but predictable

I loved the Liberty character and all the “birds” but the main character did not gel. Why was she such a wimp before? Dead husband is not enough of an explanation.
Narrator a bit flat and often mispronounced words.
