Decidedly eccentric and fashionable Penelope Adair is attending the premier event of London's Season with her husband-sleuth Barnaby Adair, when a lady's body is discovered in the gardens, struck down with a finial from the terrace balustrade. Her family and the shocked hosts turn to Barnaby and Penelope for help.
Barnaby calls Inspector Stokes while Penelope learns all she can about the victim's family; and uncovers a feud between them and the Latimers over a pair of mysterious and fabulous slippers, known as Lady Latimer's shoes. The deeper Penelope and her friends, Griselda and Violet delve, the more convinced they are that the murder is connected, a direction vindicated when unexpected witnesses report seeing a lady fleeing the scene - wearing Lady Latimer's shoes.
The situation is compounded by a Romeo-and-Juliet romance, and escalating social pressure - until the pieces fall into place, and our intrepid investigators must race to prevent an even worse tragedy.

Narrator bad, story good
As others have observed the enjoyment of this book is let down by the poor narration. I really do wonder if they ever pre-listen to the narrators, or if they just randomly choose someone. His style is quite rushed or staccato somehow, which means I was missing some of the words and his pronunciation was weird, I think because he's American, which also spoiled it.
Nevertheless, the stories are interesting and different, so there's that.

Interesting stories. Dull narration
The 3 couples involved in the Barnaby Adair investigations are lovely, it’s a good mixture of people. Similarly the stories are inventive and with just the right amount of mystery.
The narration is odd. The slow pace and twisted vowels are a drawback. I really didn’t like this narrator’s style.

Sadly disappointing
I love Stephanie Laurens novels and was really looking forward to listening to these two tales. Unfortunately, whilst the stories themselves are very good and highly enjoyable the narrator reads too quickly and there is little tonal difference in his voice - might be a great voice for reading a business report to a committee but is sadly inappropriate for an historical detective novel with a dash of romance!

Book ruined by poor narrator.
I wa s really looking forward to listening to this book but I had to force myself to carry on as the narrator is so terrible - voice flat, not sure whether to be English or American, different characters fairly indistinguishable and not consistent. It was even worse because my previous book had been narrated by Simon Prebble. I shall avoid Jim McCabe in future.
