Summary
A violent jailbreak bleeds into a street fair in Wisconsin. In the wake of the carnage, a getaway van barrels down a rural highway. Inside are two men with a tenuous bond: an obsession with pain.
One is Paul Offenbach, a sadistic crime boss with a life-threatening bullet wound. The other is his hostage, Dr. Stuart Collier, now faced with a harrowing ethical quandary. Mile by mile, as a calculated battle of wills and wits plays out, the killer plots his next move. So does the doctor, sworn to do no harm but desperate to escape.
From internationally bestselling master of suspense Jeffery Deaver comes The Pain Hunter, part of The Broken Doll Collection, a series of interconnected short stories about killers and prey, justice and revenge, that can be read or listened to in a single breathless experience.

Good Enough
Liked this book. Good listen. Kept me interested. The narration by Christina Traister was also good. Jeffery Deaver has always been one of my favorites. I am looking forward to reading/listening to more in this series.

Too disjointed
I get that the author intentionally broke this up to tell the story at different times, and from different perspectives, but it wasn’t always clear when and where he was in the narration, at the beginning of each of these stories. In fact, figuring out who was who, and where we were in the narrative, took me too far out of the story to make it enjoyable.

Well done. You got me.
This seemed like a decent story as soon as it began to unfold, but I didn’t expect to be dazzled in any way… and then… we’ll I won’t ruin it for you but let’s just say… the mind games are fantastic.

Good novella
This quick story follows an escaped killer and the doctor he kidnapped to treat his gunshot wound. In addition, the story follows a police officer on the hunt for the escapee. Good short story

Sorry, hate this reader. Ruined it for me.
Couldn't keep track of the story because of the reader. Annoying tone and inflections and totally unsuitable for this tale.

Fascinating!
I’ve listened to most of Deaver’s books - or read them - so I wasn’t TOO worried that I had no idea where the story was going. And like most of Deaver’s work, the story traveled to an unnerving, but satisfying conclusion.
Unfortunately, the narrator often used the currently popular “uptalk” which reduces declarative sentences into inappropriate questions.

the Doll Series is The October List
If you liked " The October List" you will love this series. It has you looking for the Clues again and again and then realized that you should have been better listening to the details of the words used. I re-listened to the series 3 times completely to confirm that I didn't miss anything.
