About this listen

Odysseus has been away from Ithaca, the Greek city-state under his rule, for ten years while fighting in the Trojan War. After the fall of Troy, Odysseus begins the long journey home to his wife and son; however, his journey is plagued by misfortune as the gods feud over his fate, leaving the Ithacans to believe that he has died.

In the myths and legends that are retold here, Fagles has captured the energy and poetry of Homer's original in a bold, contemporary idiom, and given us an Odyssey to read aloud, to savor, and to treasure for its sheer lyrical mastery.

Very enjoyable

I've always been fascinated by the stories of the Greek myths and this book did not disappoint. It is read reasonably well by the narrator and the tales are quite absorbing with a lovely turn of phrase here and there, such as the quirky description of the coming of morning - I found myself looking forward to the repeat of that one! Yes, I'll definitely be coming back to this gem from Homer!

Terrible narration

Monotone voice, strong US accent. Loses the magic of the story completely. Do not recommend.

Disappointing, but not worth giving back

As it was only 78p, it seems petty to return it, so I won't, but I should have listened to the sample first. An American accent ruins it for me. I know my objection is somewhat irrational, since an American accent is hardly less authentic than an English one; none of it was originally written in English anyway. But I simply find it grating. I wish it was made clearer whether titles were U.S. or U.K. narration. Classics of world literature just don't sound right to me with an American accent, and this isn't the first time I've wasted money. I'm glad I didn't squander a whole credit on it, as it would definitely have had to go back.
