Summary

Detective Sarah Noble investigates a dark case in the town of Slayton.

It began with the whispers.

In the woods, in the park, and always at night. Then they came into town, down dark alleys, and in the shadows. Before long there was a knock on the door.

When the couple were found dead with their faces frozen in horror, the black-eyed children were nowhere to be seen. Until it happened again.

Detective Sarah Noble will need all her intuition - and some help from young Elliott Carter - to crack a case where nothing is as it seems.

A gripping new Slayton thriller with a shocking twist, from bestselling author Caroline Mitchell. Perfect for fans of Alex North and Cara Hunter.

The Detective Sarah Noble thrillers can be read as standalones, or in any order.

I persisted with this until the end and it’s ok

I got this in a 2 for 1 offer from Audible and so had not listened to the first book first - I didn’t struggle with the story however as the brief mentions to the previous book were explanatory enough. I did find it a little ‘juvenile’ I suppose for its genre. I wanted a good chilling ghost story and this was all a bit twee and cosy for my liking. If you like exceptionally chilling ghost stories then this is going to let you down as it’s very tame, and the characters are very one dimensional but it’s an ok listen if you’re busy doing housework or something in similar. I would never use a credit for it- wait until it’s a cheap offer unless you love a cosy crime. Emma Gregory is a great narrator but I didn’t like her for this sadly …

A bit like The Shinning…

Not as good as book one but still enjoyable. Lots of characters and red herrings abound but a wee bit too much of the supernatural for my liking. Will wait for book 3 ..

Really enjoyable, excellent narration!

I bought this straight after listening to the first book in this series, I don’t normally like police series but I can see book 3 being set up and I will be excited to listen to that once it’s out. I enjoyed this more than the first one because there was less lingering on violence towards women, which I found uncomfortable to listen to in the first book. The narrator is so talented, her differentiation between voices and accents is on pointe and so skilful.

Hooked

Unlike others I found the narration easy to listen to. I listened to both of these books back to back and am now waiting for the next one. Easy listening with a great twist

Entertaining

A decent listen though somewhat convoluted but that didn’t spoil it. A nice mix of characters though the baddies can be a little “mwahaha”.

Good murder mystery

Although the Night Whispers followed on from the Midnight Man, I didn't find it had the same creepy horror story feel about it.
Good story made better with brilliant narration.

Fabulous read!!

The Night Whispers by Caroline Mitchell was a 5 star read. The 2nd in the Slayton Thrillers and an enjoyable read. I definitely wouldn’t move to Slayton. The main character Sarah returns to investigate and is a likeable character. I definitely recommend this series.
