Summary

Detective Dave Robicheaux is fighting his demons to overcome his toughest case yet. There's something off about the relationship between mob boss Tony Nemo, local author Levon Broussard and New Orleans poster boy Jimmy Nightengale, and after a vicious assault, it's up to Robicheaux to uncover the truth.

Complicating matters is the sudden death of T. J. Dartez, the New Iberian local responsible for Robicheaux's wife's death, and all are looking to the detective as the murderer.

Can Robicheaux clear his name?

Not up to James Lee Burke’s usual standards

An over-long story seemingly padded out with much too much pointless description. Usually I like Lee Burke’s atmospheric descriptions of the Deep South but this time it seemed like he was filling for the inadequacies of the plot.

The narration, on the other hand was very good.

Not his best

Way too much Dave Robicheau introspection and please leave Alafare out of the next book. Makes the ending so obvious and predictable when she is in danger at the end

James Lee Burke at his very best

This is a great story that is full of fantastic imagery both surreal and ethereal at times. His characters are well known, well drawn, mystical and sometimes stretching belief. His writing is at his poetic best. The narration was excellent with an array of character voices. Sometimes a back pedal on the dramatic in the narration delivery could have been employed. This has to rate as one of Burkes best books.

Another great Robicheaux book

Will Patton's performance is a good as ever. Clete Purcel is one of the great characters, always outragous and hilarious

Rambling purple prose

I have enjoy James Lee Burke’s books in the past but they seem to be deteriorating. His so called lyricism always tended to be a little intrusive but it has become hackneyed and annoying. Worst of all his plotting has become rambling almost to the point of incoherence. Robicheaux’s surrealistic mind excursions are unconvincing and odd. A lot more rationality in the plotting would be helpful.

New Iberia Blues audio review

Genius writing and really talented reading. Will Patten bought the writing alive, where if i were reading the book i might be tempted to skim instead of hearing the beauty of the lyricism of James Lee Burkes writing.

Excellent narration

What you would expect from James Lee Burke, the stories have become rather formulaic but still make a good listen. The narration made this story for me,absolutely terrific

Excellent

Will Patton IS Dave Robicheaux to me now! the perfect reader for James Lee Burkes elegiac prose that is a hymn to the lost beauty of the Cajun world and the splendor of the Louisiana landscapes.
