Summary

The Nazi Hunters is the incredible, hitherto untold story of the most secret chapter in the SAS' history. Officially, the world's most elite special forces unit was dissolved at the end of the Second World War and not reactivated until the 1950s.

Among their last actions was a disastrous commando raid into occupied France in 1944, which ended in the capture, torture and execution of 31 soldiers. It can now be revealed that the SAS never was dissolved: it lived on, commanded personally by Churchill and hidden even from the British government.

They were tasked with hunting through the ruins of the Reich for the SS commanders responsible for the murders of their comrades, including many who had escaped the failed justice of the Nuremberg trials. Along the way they discovered before anyone else the full horror of Hitler's regime and the growing threat from Stalin's Russia.

Still studied by the SAS today and a central part of their founding myth, the story of the Nazi hunters is now told by best-selling author Damien Lewis.

Fascinating true story

Would you consider the audio edition of The Nazi Hunters to be better than the print version?

I have not read the book but did enjoy the narration.

Who was your favorite character and why?

You cannot really have a favourite character as there are some many brave men in this.

Which character – as performed by Leighton Pugh – was your favourite?

Just the general narration which was very gripping and poignant.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I think you cannot fail to be moved when any part deals with the German atrocities whether singular or plural.

My review of an excellent listening audio book

Excellent and very explicit review of event's that should not be forget about - the actions of such brave young men and women, and there Commander's determination to seek justice for their murder's by an appalling Nazi regime of men gives a very vivid account in detail.

Been told before.

Any additional comments?

The "incredible untold story'"was previously told by Anthony Kemp in his 1986 book, 'The Secret Hunters'. His book was 96 pages long which was about right, this book printed is 496 pages. However the story is worth being retold, a little too much padding at the beginning to explain the rationale behind the intial search for war criminals.

Insightful to a unique moment in history

First two thirds are particularly well told and engaging. You get the feeling that pieces of a jigsaw have been put together but there are gaps which are only the fault of the crazy secret nature of politicians at that time.
You are left feeling pride and wonder at the men from that time that took unbelievable risks and the bravery of the civilians that helped them. A story worth telling and knowing.

Superb

At times it felt like you were in the Vosges mountains with the SAS. Very well told story, gripping, historical, melancholy, nerve jangling . . the lot. What tremendous creatures we humans truly are, and equally. . what horrible creatures we can truly be.

Excellent Read...

A well constructed book from so much source material. The courage and bravery of ours and our allies went above and beyond. It is records like this that help keep theirs and all the innocent civilian victims, alive.

Lest we forget.
