Summary
The world’s most beloved detective, Hercule Poirot - the legendary star of Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express and most recently The Monogram Murders and Closed Casket - returns in a stylish, diabolically clever mystery set in 1930s London.
Returning home after lunch one day, Hercule Poirot finds an angry woman waiting outside his front door. She demands to know why Poirot has sent her a letter accusing her of the murder of Barnabas Pandy, a man she has neither heard of nor ever met.
Poirot has also never heard of a Barnabas Pandy and has accused nobody of murder. Shaken, he goes inside, only to find that he has a visitor waiting for him - a man who also claims also to have received a letter from Poirot that morning, accusing him of the murder of Barnabas Pandy....
Poirot wonders how many more letters of this sort have been sent in his name. Who sent them, and why? More importantly, who is Barnabas Pandy, is he dead, and, if so, was he murdered? And can Poirot find out the answers without putting more lives in danger?

Too complex and without real evidence
Started well. Got complicated. Watery ending. I love Christie and sadly Hannah missed the mark (for me) with this one. I'll try another though as may just be a one off.

Really enjoyable
I was a little sceptical about this book after seeing a couple of poor reviews, but decided to give it a try. I really enjoyed it; I thought the story was gripping and I looked forward to listening to more. Julian Rhind-Tutt is a fabulous reader, I have heard him many times and always enjoy listening to him; he did a great job of conveying all the characters. My only criticism is that the denoument took ages - it was a couple of hours more listening after Poirot gathered all the suspects together so I think that could have been tightened up.

Beautifully narrated but
This latest instalment reminds me of some of the lesser ITV Poirot episodes where a short story was drawn out to fill 90 minutes. Or in this case, almost 10 hours.
There’s a fine line between picking up on an earlier topic - in this case Battenberg cake - and just repeating the same idea at various intervals.
Deductions are based on word-play rather than physical proof so Hannah’s new regulars (narrator Catchpool and feisty Fee) are given very little to do.
A mystery surrounding the death of Grandy Pandy has a lovely 1950s ring to it, but was it ever excusable for a dog to scratch and scar a child’s face?
Like a Battenberg, this nostalgic treat is rather insubstantial and cloying.

The best so far
I liked this “new” Poirot more than its predecessors. The plot is unlikely but engaging, with twists and turns and a cast of characters with decided personalities.
I am glad Poirot has a more intelligent “Watson” in this resurrection- Hastings always annoyed me !
Poirot didn’t translate well to the post-War world, so it’s good that Hannah’s novels are situated in a less bureaucratic era, which removes some of the improbability; it’s easier to suspend disbelief for events before our lifetimes.

Poirot on point
I have really enjoyed all four books so far! Poirot character is written i a most descriptive and wonderful way. Edward Catchpool a brilliant sidekick detective 🕵️♂️ 👏 performance was amazing, just need more stories now.....please

Good Sunday afternoon tale
I hadn’t realised that this wasn’t a real Agatha Christie book when I started listening. A couple of things felt a tad off which did make look up who the author actually was half way through but on the whole it’s a pretty good tale and I think she captures David Suchet’s Poirot quite well. As others have said the book isn’t as tight as an Agatha Christie’s original but if you just want an enjoyable Agatha Christie kind of story to listen to whilst doing the washing up I think it hits the spot.
