About this listen
We all think we know who we are. What we’re capable of. Roz is a single mother, a physiotherapist, a sister, a friend. She’s also desperate. Her business has gone under, she’s crippled by debt and she’s just had to explain to her son why someone’s taken all their furniture away.
But now a stranger has made her an offer. For one night with her, he’ll pay enough to bring her back from the edge. Roz has a choice to make.

After Daly other novels 'Keep Your Friends Close' and 'Just What Kind of Mother Are You?', I had high hopes for this one. Sadly, it did not really fulfil the promise. It was quite an interesting tale, but sadly it seemed to run out of steam as it went along.Disapointed!

There was a lot going on in this book - debt, marriage breakdown, fraud, adultery, payment for sex, murder, blackmail, reckless driving to identify but a few and I wondered if there was perhaps a bit too much crammed in, so that some credibility of motive and intent was lost.
As a result of this, the book was slightly spoilt for me by a number of events which didn't quite ring true such as the immediate nature of the 'indecent proposal' and the context of an attack which led to murder which was less than convincing to me. I wondered if the book had been written in a bit of a hurry or even had been Paula's first novel which hadn't quite worked but was brought out off the back of the success of her first two published novels. I thought Paula's first two novels were very good and had been looking forward to this one.
Overall I was still drawn in by the story's pace and the quality of the telling of the story of the everyday events of the characters' lives - this is one of the author's great strengths for me because the nature of that detail in those contexts is so realistic.
Although slightly disappointed with this novel I still look forward to Paula Daly's next book!

Would you consider the audio edition of The Mistake I Made to be better than the print version?
yesWhat was one of the most memorable moments of The Mistake I Made?
There were many. What does Janine Birkett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
Excellent reading with "real people" voice. Brought each character alive. Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Ross has a kind heart.Any additional comments?
I love how the book has incorporated characters from two previous books by Paula Daly without them being like a series. Each book stands well alone. The book has just the right humour with a serious side. Totally non depressing too.First class writer

The story was kind of slow and obvious. The physiotherapist specialist knowledge was interesting at first but then became overblown padding. I am afraid the reader irritated me - kind of patronising, everything on one level.Middling

Which scene did you most enjoy?
All of themDid you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
The whole book is perhaps a bit twee, considering the subject, so it's hard to get too involved emotionally, but although I found that a bit hard to accept at first, and I found the main character a bit too nice, I really got involved in the story and the charecters.Any additional comments?
Despite the ending, which is a little too good to be true (everyone lives happy everafter), the book handles a potentially difficult subject in a delightfully light manner, and is very, very gripping wayGreat story, perhaps not what you'd expect
