Sara Kestelman offers an introspective performance of George Eliot’s 1860 novel about country life, The Mill on the Floss.
The novel centers around siblings Tom and Maggie Tulliver, who grow up at Dorlcote Mill on the River Floss. The connection between rational Tom and impetuous Maggie is challenged by a number of critical events, including their father’s death and Maggie’s attraction to Philip Wakem, the scion of a rival family. Kestelman sounds like a character in a BBC television production, and the understated drama that she brings to her narration and dialogue fits well with this meditation on family bonds.
