Summary
Julianne Westcott was living the kind of life that other Protestant girls in prewar Liverpool could only dream about: old money, silk ball gowns, and prominent young men lining up to escort her. But when she learns of a blind-and-deaf brother, institutionalized since birth, the illusion of her perfect life and family shatters around her.
While visiting her brother in secret, Julianne meets and befriends Kyle McCarthy, an Irish Catholic groundskeeper studying to become a priest. Caught between her family's expectations, Kyle's devotion to the Church, and the intense new feelings that the forbidden courtship has awakened in her, Julianne must make a choice: uphold the life she's always known or follow the difficult path toward love.
But as war ripples through the world and the Blitz decimates England, a tragic accident forces Julianne to leave everything behind and forge a new life built on lies she's told to protect the ones she loves. Now, after 20 years of hiding from her past, the truth finds her - will she be brave enough to face it?

She had to survive the bombing.....
I bought this book based on the great reviews - well, I just don't know. The protagonist who prides herself in the first part of the book to not care what everyone else thinks, doesn't believe in God, falls in love with an almost priest (Thornbirds alert here), survives an unfortunate event, and all of a sudden, cares about her vanity more than the quality of life. I am trying not to give too many details. The book was shallow, the protagonist was shallow and I felt that it was somewhat an attack on believers in God. We read the book while on a 10 hour road trip, and since we had invested some time into the book, finished it. But, honestly, this is such a dumb story, and so unrealistic, it offends anyone's intelligence and goes so against a woman's nature who has a child, it's just beyond any common sense. Pros; No bad language. Not worth a credit.

Tears and 3.5 of 5 wood-whittled peacocks (or “stars” if you’re not fun enough to make up your own rating system ;) )
It began with lovely flourish, ended with tears of relief and pain, but the middle was absolutely frustrating and aggravating. I suppose it’s a good sign that a book can evoke such emotion, but the main character was so frustratingly selfish and aggravatingly stubborn that it really brought this book down from a 4.5 star rating to a 3. I don’t believe her choices were at all relatable, and this brought the book from fiction to fantastical in the worst of ways.
I loved Kyle. He was good and kind; a little on the 2D side as well, yet much deeper than Julianne.
I am glad I gave the book a go; it was worth the tears, but I could’ve done without the unnecessary and unrealistic aggravation.

Beautiful, deeply moving love story. The narration was perfection. Be prepared to have a full box of Kleenex at the ready. Highly recommended!

Loved this Story!
I loved this story. It has everything g a good love story needs. Fate, ambition, persistence and undeniable love! Kyle is every woman's dream minus the priesthood! I liked that it ended with her at the confessional and reuniting. Great job on the accents and characters...I saw them in my minds eye!

Best book ever
I’m not a Catholic and if you are a catholic you will simply adore this book. I’m a born again Christian which the difference is we have accepted Jesus for what He did of dying on the cross, which pays for our sins once and for all because He said it is finished. There’s no more that can be done. Then rose from the dead. Which gives us eternal life with Him in Heaven if we accept Him into our lives and hearts and devote our lives living for Him. No purgatory to continue to suffer for our sins.
Anyways, this story of faith, love, and misunderstanding and explanations, and learning God’s will and WW2 and growing old and secrets that you have to come clean with an learning what true sacrifice and love is over what people will think of you.... it’s amazing.
Now to people who read stories that are beautiful stories but they turn out to talk a lot about God and faith, in your reviews please refrain from being so rude and nasty just because they talk about their faith. I read this and I don’t agree with what they have to do such as wait a year before they can have communion? Because they have to do 1 year of Catholic studies? Not Bible studies but Catholic studies. My Bible says be saved and have communion. But I’m not slamming this book. It’s a beautiful book!
I hope you all can understand.

Sad read
The narration for this book was excellent, however the story was just too depressing. There were several times I almost quit reading because it just felt like it wandered with no real plot.
