Not his best work

This was in fact the first Greene book to be published and in the preface to a Penguin reprint he says he finds it a little embarrassing, derivative and romantic.

He missed slow and occasionally boring from his list. There are of course good things about it, there is a thought provoking internal dialogue that follows the main character, some tense moments and it is mildly erotic in parts.

I was delighted to have found a Greene book I had not read but I think my time would have been better spent re-reading the the Power and the Glory. Come on Audible get that one recorded!

Nicely writtenbut lacking a compelling story

The book is too concerned with the psychological problems of a protagonist for whom we can have little pity. Meanwhile, Elizabeth is a nebulous character, hard to imagine. Classy writing, though.
