Summary

When novice monk Tenzin Dorje is told by his lama that the Red Army is invading Tibet, his country's darkest moment paradoxically gives him a sense of purpose like no other. He accepts a mission to carry two ancient, secret texts across the Himalayas to safety.

Half a century later, in a paradox of similarly troubling circumstances, Matt Lester is called upon to convey his own particular wisdom as a scientist, when Matt's nanotech project is mysteriously moved from London to a research incubator in Los Angeles.

Tenzin and Matt embark on parallel adventures which have spine-chilling connections. Tenzin's perilous journey through the Himalayas, amid increasing physical hardship and the ever-present horror of Red Army capture, is mirrored by Matt's contemporary, but no less traumatic challenges, as his passionate relationship with his fiancée, Isabella, and his high-flying career undergo escalating crises.

It is at the moment when both Tenzin and Matt face catastrophe that their stories converge, spectacularly transforming our understanding of all that has gone before.

Beautiful story

I looked for another book written by Michie after reading ‘the Dalai Lama’s cat’ as he has such an easy way to convey Tibetan Buddhism concepts interspersed in deceptively simple stories. I look forward to more of his books.

ENLIGHTENING!

A great read of two interlinked stories which grip your imagination, provide interesting information on Buddhism and its difficult history with camaraderie and good humour! Another great read, I will be going straight on to the sequel . Keep them coming David!

Finally an audiobook!

I have read the book, The Magician of Lhasa, at least two or three times, and have now been able to listen to the audiobook. Not only this but my next listen is The Secret Mantra, the long awaited sequel. Thank you so much for your time, effort, and patience in creating a fine work of art.

Enjoyed the book

Enjoyed the book! However I would’ve preferred the book better if during the Matt Lester portions there was less or no talk about sex. I wasn’t expecting so much talk about it. It almost made me stop reading book down several times. I ultimately just skipped forward over these parts, to continue with the story. The story of the escape from Tibet was rivetin! I enjoyed this book. It had good messages. However I like the Dalai Lama’s cat, Series much better. But this was worth a read!

Thought provoking

Wasn’t expecting to enjoy this title as much as I did - the traditional Tibetan Buddhist prayer ending was fantastic!

Boring

I guess I read the reviews and expected more. The monotone of the narrator/author was very boring. I had to get the echoes all to raise volume because it was too soft unless I was just listening. I tend to have all of them set to play audiobooks while I move from room to room as I do housework. I have no hearing loss so this is read at a lower volume. My friend who was here said the same thing.

Inspiring and Excellent teachings

I love the way the writer presented beautiful life lessons and teachings in a practical manner. I was engaged in this story from beginning to end. It has helped to settle my mind during these tumultuous times.
