Book 1: Jason and the Argonauts - Book 2: Medea

As a casual listener, I hated this, but as a high school English literature teacher, I have to show it a level of respect.

Book 1 is excellent. The MC is a medieval version of John Wayne, "rough & tough & don't take no lip from anyone". This brash rebelliousness makes the MC flawed, but realistic and a bit of an anti-hero. Overall it's a heroic tale.

Book 2 is the opposite of the first. Since the end of the 1st book, the MC's flaws have festered into total hubris. All of the suffering he endures is the direct result of this own petty, stubbornness as he forces his allies to become antagonist. So if you enjoy Greek or Shakespearean tragedies with their absurdly high body counts, you will love Book 2.

Book 3 should not exist. Unlike in a classic tragedy the MC is still alive and has festered into a worthless creature whose story I no longer cared to listen to.

Excellent ..... don’t think just get it!!!!

I have over 400 audiobooks in my library and this is my second review I’ve written. I really enjoyed this trilogy very well written and especially enjoyed the narrators gruff thick voice and accent!!!!!! I will add if cursing offends you this book is not for you..... but I enjoyed it and felt the necessity for it about the characters...... I can’t wait to see if Whisky continues in the next chapter for this series or does something new.... can’t wait!!!!!! Do your self a favor and get his books.... put on headphones and get sucked up in to Whiskeys work and enjoy

Four novels in one

I passed over this book several times because one reviewer said the story was "tragic". I don't like tragic stories. But I finally decided that maybe this person had a low threshold for what they considered tragic and bought the book anyway. Spoilers ahead.

Turns out that, yes, there is one tragedy in the book, but I saw it coming thanks to the warning of that other reviewer. And that tragedy serves as an background for the three remaining stories in the book. I empathize with the main character's bitterness towards those who contributed to the tragedy and his unwillingness to forgive what he sees as a betrayal. I guess that might count as an additional tragedy.

I almost returned the book shortly after purchasing it because the narrator's accent was almost unintelligible and his ability to mimic other accents was almost non-existent. The only reason I kept on listening was that I liked the main character, who was hilarious in his unabashed aggressiveness.

(I'll also add that there was a small amount of porn in the book that I really didn't care for, even though it was funny, too.)

Loved it!!

Well written and the narration was off the charts! I was sad to see it end but hope Whiskey will continue this story with more awesomeness! It is one of those stories that grabs you and takes you for a ride. Highly recommend

I gotta be honest I have no idea where to start

I don’t ever leave reviews if a book is totally bad so there’s some points in its favor. I will say this book features the most unlikable main character that I’ve ever had the misfortune of reading. Not only does he possess absolutely nothing in the way of tact (this can be over looked) he has absolutely nothing in the way of character growth. He’s completely unable or unwilling to look past the his own self centered existence. That along with the fact that he holds grudges against people for doing things even after he starts to understand why.

The narrator was quite good in my opinion, it’s very difficult to through that country twang into a reading which also means I have to give props to the author for that as I can’t imagine how difficult it must’ve been to write it.

This is a roller-coaster ride.

The narration is very strange. I was both attracted by it and repelled by it in turns. My throat is sore just from listening to the rough, raspy, gravelly voices, and the accents were very strange - but somehow it all worked. Strange, off-putting but also novel and interesting. Book 1 is worth it just for the experience.

The MC is a Mary-Sue antihero who starts out likeable, relatable, and then turns darker. His journey through book 1 is interesting, if slightly inhuman. He never reflects on killing, seems uninterested in any kind of growth or process. By the time the book hits mid-point, he seems like a veteran of 30 years of war, even though he's a 16 year old kid who had never seen a battle until recently. Strange journey, but oh well. It was a fun read.

Book 2, well...it's not to my tastes at all. Any of the charm from book 1 is gone, there is no humor, and the MC is just a massively unbelievable, antisocial killer who cares about one thing and one thing only. It's dull, and I greatly dislike both him and the story construct, and, frankly, everyone in the book. There's no humanity within the characters, the story or the situation. It seems like the author has grown to hate the MC, the world and everyone created in it - and makes sure we do as well. There's no one and nothing left to like or root for. I ended up just rooting for it to end already, and it did, in the worst way.

I was utterly uninterested in continuing into book 3. My dislike for the MC is complete. I don't trust the story, the characters or situations at all. I don't care to know what happens next.

I recommend that you read and enjoy book 1, then bail out.

Veery basic fantasy

Now, this book is alright. The story has some interesting ideas. But if there has ever been a more basic, nonedescript fantasy story I've not heard about it. *SMALL SPOILERS* The main character goes from newly minted slave to an expert of his slavers daily routine and practises within a scentence. Characters are described with name, age, haircolor and eyecolor. Maincharacter goes from mouthy, arrogant peseant into a mouthy arrogant bodyguard of a princess within a couple of hours (in story time, not hours of the book) because he defeated a mage that were going to execute him for breaking a law. Things just happen without direct motivation.

The narrator has an awesome voice but he slams his performance by doing waay to grovly voices for too many characters which, paired up with heavy accents, sometimes becomes impossible to understand.

EDIT: Fter having finished the entire book, my rating is still the same. Very basic plot, very flat characters and mumbly narration.

Strong lead.

I get sick and tired of whiney conflicted lead characters Tanner is neither. Strong sure and competent describe Tanner that's what I love about him and narrator was awesome one of my new favorites.

Enjoyed it

A nice little trilogy
If you like Adventure fantasy Or just swords and sorcery pick it up for a credit it’s well worth a weekend


There is a 20 year Time jump Between book two and three I want to know what happened in those 20 years but other than that I liked it

Leaves you wanting more

This was a fast paced great story with an ultra badass main character. The only problem is that there's only one book. A series would have been great.
