Summary
What do you eat when the shops run out of food?
Zoe loves teaching science, she loves her garden, and most of all she loves her quiet, peaceful bungalow. Then at school, people start falling ill. The virus is airborne and highly infectious. It starts with flu symptoms, confusion, and sleepiness, which worsen until one day they just don't wake up. It decimates the population and leaves chaos in its wake. Now Zoe has to find a way to survive.
Luckily, when the pandemic strikes, she already has a greenhouse full of vegetable seedlings, but not everyone around is as prepared. Can she avoid the people hunting for food: the "knockers" who don't always just knock? And will her strategy of stay in, hide, and wait be enough?

Very good but it just misses something.
It's a very good and well written book. The narrator wasn't the easiest voice to get into.
The story leaves a lot of questions unanswered and the lead character forgets about people who may suffer with the pandemic. Overall, great that it's an English story for once.
It is a very inspired listen with some wonderful characters and scenes. The writer takes you on a very interesting journey from normal school teacher from South Oxhey to a rescuer to a fully functioning survivalist.

Enjoyable
I thought this would be an autobiography style but was intrigued when it wasn’t, I felt like it had a hint of Hand maids tail to it also, would recommend :)

One of the best books I've ever read!
gripping storyline, easy to listen to & we'll thought out plot I read a lot of books & rarely write a full review but in my opinion this book deserved it.
initially i struggled with the narators voice but quickly realise she very much suited the story. I'm very glad I persevered!

A young woman succeeding against long odds.
Not like other survival stories. More about surviving on your own without weapons. Caring for others when confronted with inequity. A good solid read.

A Lovely Find.
A very well timed post apocalyptic story. Well written and narrated. A cautionary tale - a worst case scenario of a viral outbreak and subsequent collapse of British society.
I very much hope there will be more to follow.

Very enjoyable, very British
A big fan of this genre, this was different clever and easy listening
No excessive expletives or random sexual encounters found in similar American books
Go Zoe who's is not brave or heroic her, but become both

An English, country garden, apocalypse.
Overall, this a nice, middle-class, middle-England take on the apocalypse. It might sound like I'm damning with faint praise, but that's not my intention.
Zoe is no one's macho, supersoldier survivalist and just as well as that trope has been done to death. She is an introvert with a modest skill set and limited ambition. The kill count is presumably high, but it all happens offscreen, there are some murders again offscreen and bloodless.
With a nicely matched story and narrator, this is a refreshing take on the end of civilisation with enough Covid 19 echoes to permit the necessary suspension of disbelief.

An interesting and enjoyable post pandemic story.
It makes a nice chance to come across a British post pandemic story.
It's even better when the hero isn't ex special forces and armed to the teeth but is a science teacher in her mid 30's.
There's no saving the world or searching for a cure and the story is all the better and more believable for it.
