Summary

A PROUD BEAUTY

When the tragic death of her gamester father leaves her destitute and alone, society beauty Sylvia Stafford finds work as a governess in a merchant's household in Cheapside. Isolated from the fashionable acquaintance of her youth, she resigns herself to lonely spinsterhood...until a mysterious visitor convinces her to temporarily return to her former life - and her former love.

A SCARRED BEAST

Colonel Sebastian Conrad is no longer the dashing cavalry officer Sylvia once fell in love with. Badly scarred during the Sepoy Rebellion, he has withdrawn to his estate in rural Hertfordshire where he lives in near complete seclusion. Brooding and tormented, he cares nothing for the earldom he has inherited - and even less for the faithless beauty who rejected him three years before.

A SECOND CHANCE

A week together in the remote Victorian countryside is the last thing either of them ever wanted. But when fate intervenes to reunite them, will a beastly earl and an impoverished beauty finally find their happily-ever-after? Or are some fairy-tale endings simply not meant to be?

Happy ever after...

It's the usual Riches to rags to riches story but with a little Twist, but what I like about it was that it wasn't too long and drawn out but a really enjoyable story

Such a sweet story!

Lovely little story, and such a sweet ending. Good narration, but I’m afraid no narrator will do regarding historical romance except Alex Wyndham! Still a lovely listen though.

Ponderous progress in a ponderous story

The heroine is dithery the hero erratically bad tempered, so much so you wonder if they can ever resolve their relationship.i pined for a bit of direct plain speaking instead of all the emotional waffle.Neither character was likeable.

Delightful Regency Romance

This was a lovely story about lost and then regained love.
I'm glad I've found this author as it's clean as well, with no gratious sex scenes which personally I abhor. (too much information-
we've all got imaginations!!)
Very well read, I look forward to finding more from this author, thanks Mimi and Justine for an enjoyable listen.

Narrator spoilt this.

Narrator has dreadful habit of sounding as if she’s almost bleating at the end of words. She’s also clearly not English as she can’t pronounce words like Mainwaring properly which grates horribly. FYI it’s pronounced mannering. So awful I couldn’t get beyond a few chapters. Pretty sure I can work out what happens though

Absolutely Dreadful Narrator Gave Me Headache

Justine Eyre ruined this book. I cannot understand how this woman has passed auditions to narrate audiobooks as she speaks stilted and with no passion, depth nor variation. Her banal style gave me such a bad headache, after 10 minuets of torture I could not listen any more and had to take a headache pill for pain relief.

Appalling narration

I stuck with it, simply to see how the two protagonists cleared up their mutual misunderstandings. All rather silly, but there we are. The narrator, however, had me either laughing - “craavaart” - or tutting - “Miss Starford” and “Miss Stafford” both referring to the same character. Presumably this is how an American reader thinks the English upper classes spoke in the 1860s. Could not the author or producer of the audio recording have set her right on proper names, the meaning of various words etc etc? It really ruined the book for me.

A delightful period romance

Longing, a little angst, humour and more. Well worth your time. And the performance is excellent.
