Summary

Caithleen and Baba, first encountered in The Country Girls, are now living in Dublin, where they discuss men, drink gin, and try to look fast. Cait, in the pursuit of true love, becomes involved with the fanatically domineering Eugene Gaillard. Painful disillusion and occasional moments of bliss in her life make this a bittersweet tale, and it is told with all the perception and wit that is the hallmark of Edna O’Brien.

Wonderful

Bought after loving Country Girls. Another great one, with some quotes to stop you in your tracks. I have seen a few reviews criticising the author as narrator, but I loved her. Her pacing suited the style, and who better to know the meaning of the work?

Brilliant

I love this book which is my favourite of the trilogy and have read it many times. The author really brings Ireland to life and the characters of Baba and Kathleen.

Narrator too old for part

I can’t listen to anymore of this as the voice should be a young girl, sorry but Edna’s voice is just wrong and too old. This ruined it for me.

Superb. Nothing less.

Funny, heart-wrenching, and eloquent in equal measure. O'Brien's own narration wrings the emotions from the words, and from her own heart.
