About this listen

Not every danger comes in the form of a mega-threat like a Titan. Some predators are a lot cozier...more personal.

When one such creature threatens an independent tutor, Harry Dresden must shake off the blood and dirt of his most recent battles and rise to the occasion, even when it turns out that the new predator is far more dangerous and connected than first appearances would suggest.

I was surprised when I found out Jim Butcher read it himself and to be honest, he did really well at it. The only issues I had were tones and accents that sounded off when compared to Marsters' fantastic performances but it's unfair to compare the two. As for the story itself, it's solid. There were a few things that felt out of place at times, maybe repeated too often or the like, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Not the new best book in the series but certainly worth listening to.

A solid story, surprisingly well read

A great story, a good look into Chicago and her recovery post-BG, the performance was great and fun, you could really hear Jim enjoying his characters and honestly it's interesting to hear how he imagines them sounding. Great book!

Solid entry

Great to get a Dresden Fix before the next book and really cool to hear it in Jim's voice

Loved every minute

I was holding off listening to this until I finished reading Battle Grounds and I'm glad I did and I recommend if you haven't read or listen to Battle Grounds do it! I'll look forward to the next Audible entry by Jim for Harry!

Fantastic little side quest of Mr Dresden by Jim Butcher

I love all the Dresden Files books and have very much enjoyed James Marsters' narration on the others. Really nice to hear Jim Bucher's own voice on this one.

Great story, great narration.

I really like this book, it was awesome just to get some more Dresden content. Of course to start it was difficult listening to Dresden without James Marsters but I have to say I really enjoyed Jim's rendition! Thanks Jim! I'm looking forward to the next book and James's narration.

Awesome

Butcher has a great reading voice for audio, though his delivery is occasionally a touch heavy handed, and he quite understandably fails to match the comic instincts and downbeat pathos of Marsters, his go to narrator. Nevertheless this was a really creditable effort. The book almost feels like the opening of a novel that ran out of steam and resolves too fast, but still it's a joy to wade back into the old familiar Dresdenverse.

A creditable effort at narration by Butcher

I was very nervous about Jim doing this… but he did a great job. Is it Marsters?
No.
But he did a great job. And the bloopers at the end made me chuckle.

Short story, but knocks it out the park again. Loved it.

(I still want Marsters back for the full length though!)

Not Marsters… but still good

Good hearing Jims version of Harry again, although a bit flatter than the early chapters of Skin Game. Great story, and the extra part nearly had me off the road laughing

Great listen

I love the story and the performance and virtually everything about this, Jim brought a nice new twist into the world he's crafted these last 22 years and added things that I didn't expect to be seeing anywhere near it.

The plot is - well it's sort of new for Harry, having been kicked from the White Council he's on the outside now and has to work with people he'd rather not have directly now, swallowing pride and doing things he'd rather not do - and I love that! The frank idealism he's holding to is something I've always felt has been Harry's core (and a sign of who is and isn't a decent person) especially in the wake of what happened with Ethniu.

There's little I've got to complain about, the story is fine and works well for a short novella and goes into Harry's trauma we've only seen on the outside with Little Things, those small moments of Harry simply breaking off is done as perfectly as anyone whos lost loved ones can attest to.

There's little to complain about in performance either, he's got a lovely speaking voice and I like hearing how Jim envisions each character in his head while speaking.

All in all it's a solid win for another Dresden Files piece and only makes me more anxious for the next full story.

Decent romp into post-Titan Dresden
