Summary

Not every danger comes in the form of a mega-threat like a Titan. Some predators are a lot cozier...more personal.

When one such creature threatens an independent tutor, Harry Dresden must shake off the blood and dirt of his most recent battles and rise to the occasion, even when it turns out that the new predator is far more dangerous and connected than first appearances would suggest.

Well done Jim but not James

Great to hear a story from the man himself. buuut, don't give up the day job..... please..... no, never..... I'm serious. keep writing forever. I COMPEL THEE......OK, with the odd food, sleep break, game night, etc...... OK OK, I compel thee to write but to maintain a good healthy work life balance... there. I feel better.

I missed Masters, but it’s wonderful to hear Jim enjoying furthering the wonderful world of the Dresden files

While not my favourite instalment, this novella has come as a breath of fresh air! Bring on the next book Jim! And thanks again for creating your amazing works :)

Enjoyable but short.

Good story but I couldn’t help comparing to Jim to James Marsters performances as Harry Dresden and (Sorry Jim) James is hard to beat and more my style. I’d buy James Marsters version should it ever be released. Way to go Jim and glad you had fun doing it!

Enjoyable Dresden short story

A short story featuring a damsel in distress where Dresden’s “blow things up” strategy is not wise. A tangle with mortal law and a lawyer who Harry isn’t able to sway. Of course things soon get complicated for our would-be hero and of course’s family John Marcone makes an appearance.
It’s read by Jim Butcher himself as a personal romp through one of his own stories. We get to hear his version of Harry and Bob’s voices, as well as that of the Queen of Air and Darkness. While we doubtless all prefer James Marsters to be the main reader, this made an interesting change. Well done to Jim for giving it a go and letting us hear the voices in his head.

story is good.... not sure about the voice acting.

in this audio book, jim bucher the author of the series read it (for the first time from what I know) and his Dresden voice seems to me to only have different levels of anger/hostility and sarcasm in the tone of his voice regardless of the situation or whom he's talking to ....

james marsters performance and tone of his dresden voice comunicated anger, danger, sadness, concern, terror, humor, love, heartbreak and so on depending on Dresden stare of mind .... it humanist Dresden and allowed the audience to empathize with Dresden on a emotional level based on the his voice...if this constant angry tone is how Dresden talks to people all the time in the books, I suddenly understand why he is so scary to everyone around him.

I love Jim in interviews and q&a sessions , he is a really good speaker and really funny guy... in fact when he talks in those big one hour q&a sessions, he is closer to what Dresden sounds like then his in the performance in this book... in this book he seems to be channeling his inner Vegeta all the time :)....

to sum up, love the book and can't wait for the next one but with james marsters back as Dresden. His performance is what gives the character life, depth and elevates it to greatness.

Love you Jim ❤️, no hate.

Better at higher speed

The story is good. Jim Butcher’s voice works with his characters and story, but the pacing was appalling. It might be something to do with the production. This is best listened to at a higher speed imo.

A solid story, surprisingly well read

I was surprised when I found out Jim Butcher read it himself and to be honest, he did really well at it. The only issues I had were tones and accents that sounded off when compared to Marsters' fantastic performances but it's unfair to compare the two. As for the story itself, it's solid. There were a few things that felt out of place at times, maybe repeated too often or the like, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Not the new best book in the series but certainly worth listening to.

Solid entry

A great story, a good look into Chicago and her recovery post-BG, the performance was great and fun, you could really hear Jim enjoying his characters and honestly it's interesting to hear how he imagines them sounding. Great book!
