Struggled with the narration at times, particularly the Canadian accent... Would still recommend. A lovely story with deep sadness in parts.

Exceptional

Wonderful mystery with a truly harrowing ending. I simply raced through this book with its great characters and nice twists.

Engaging, but...

This was an engaging story, performed well by the reader (although her North American accent has an obvious 'tell' I found distracting). I did find the ending a bit rushed and too pat and implausible. Still worth the listen, but not quite up to the race reviews, in my opinion.

sad and traumatic

I had to keep listening despite its emotional content, there was resolution in its finish. shame the sound levels weren't great at times and I had to have the volume louder than was needed so I didn't miss any of the quieter parts of the story

A then and now story with many apologies

At some point I stopped counting the number of times the phrase "I'm so, so sorry" was used. Nicola, the central character of the story seems to want to apologise for everything that happened to her family starting with her 90 years old grandmother's youth to this day. At some point I simply got fed up with her constantly "doing the right thing" and then apologising for it. I did finish the book even though about half way through I had more or less figured out who had done what to whom. Perhaps small towns in the north of England may still be stuck somewhere in the 1950's but in today's world, the past experiences of women would not carry shame into the present. It is an averagely readable story as long as you can put up with the whiny apologetic tone.

The excellent narration made a bleak story compelling.

A rather bleak tale, but excellently narrated by Sarah Durham, who charged such emotion into the narrative it was compelling listening. A voice I could listen to for hours. Well done bringing this story to life.
