Summary
As a child, Asha's mother told her ancient, forbidden stories to drive away her nightmares - and the telling of them killed her. And when Asha repeated those stories, they summoned an ancient dragon which almost destroyed her city and left Asha horribly scarred.
Ever since, she has protected her city and people (and tried to make amends) by dragon slaying. And now she may have a way to both atone for the deaths she caused and to escape an arranged marriage: her father will free her in exchange for the head of Kovu, the ancient dragon.
And the only obstacle in her path is a defiant slave boy....

This book is Amazing, but...
The last namsara was an AMAZING story, and deserves an enormous amount of praise. Unfortunately the audeobook left out paragraphs... I read the book whilst listening to it and was surprised when the narater all of a sudden was saying things that were further down on the page and a huge paragraph was missing... This happened multiple times and is extremely disappointing...

A decent enough listen
The overall plot is interesting if a little rushed in places, some genuinely good twists. Didn't think much of the romance between the main character and her love interest.
Mackie does a good job with the narration, creating distinctly different voices for characters and also just generally she has a nice voice to listen to.

Romance and Dragons
This is primarily a romantic novel with a couple of dragons in the background. This makes the romance feel rather grandiose and I struggled to relate to it, or feel moved by affair.
The prose is often cliche and predictable and the author guides the reader too much. I felt I was being told what to think rather than being left to interpret.
I did appreciate the old stories and their role in the world. I think there is an interesting metaphor surrounding the old stories, the old one, the dragons.
