Summary

In the good old days, magic was powerful, unregulated by government, and even the largest spell could be woven without filling in magic release form B1-7g.

Then the magic started fading away....

Fifteen-year-old Jennifer Strange runs Kazam, an employment agency for soothsayers and sorcerers. But work is drying up. Drain cleaner is cheaper than a spell, and even magic carpets are reduced to pizza delivery.

So it's a surprise when the visions start. Not only do they predict the death of the Last Dragon at the hands of a dragonslayer, they also point to Jennifer, and say something is coming: Big Magic....

Fantastic Story and Fantastic Narration!

Jasper Fforde’s great modern day magic adventure brought to life beautifully by Jane Collingwood! Great for younger listeners and “grown-ups” alike!

A fun tale for all ages

If I start by saying it's the story of an orphan girl enslaved by a company of magicians you will end up with completely the wrong idea! This is a quirky tale of magic, dragons and the perils of mixing politics with either of them. Highly recommended, as is the sequel, "The Song of the Quarkbeast".

Watched the TV show, loved the book

I downloaded this audiobook after watching the TV film at Christmas. The books was sufficiently different to the film to make it worth listening to plus we get to find out what happens next in the next book! Loved this!

Not the best Jasper Fforde book

Slow to start but by the end started to feel some investment in characters and story.

Having come from the Thursday Next series and Nursery Crime books this felt a bit flat if I'm being honest.

Nothing wrong with it exactly and some good moments, but lacked some of the shine I have come to expect from Fforde.

Clever and Good

I'm a Jasper Fforde fan (so slightly biased) but a fantastic book. Although written with young teenagers in mind, I'm in my thirty's and loved it. Clever storyline and nice friendly reading by Collingwood.

Get this!!!!!!!

This is the start of a wonderful series of audio books. Thought they are for young adults, I have enjoyed the whole series as a slightly older adult. In fact, I would recommend anything written by this author. He is a fantastic author and imparts a wonderful sense of the ridiculous to all his novels. I hope you enjoy these novels as much as I have if you choose to purchase them.

Magic

Chosen because I saw the film on tv, I hoped it would be as good but I found it to be fascinatingly different and written so delightfully, that I would compare it to Douglas Adams, or Terry pratchet. Brilliant, now to look for more by the same author. Thanks
