Summary

A charming and nostalgic story, perfect for fans of Coronation Street and listeners who love stories set in wartime.

They are digging for victory on the nation's favourite street.

Vera Sharples, the over-protected daughter of Ena Sharples, longs for independence, and while her mother wants to marry her off, she isn’t keen on Bob Lomax, Vera’s own choice for matrimony. Her friend, Lily Longhurst, has found herself on the wrong side of a doomed romance and decides it’s high time that she and Vera take their lives into their own hands.

With Ena unable to deny her daughter the chance to do her bit for King and Country, the girls sign up for the Land Army, where life is very different from the familiar cobbles of Coronation Street.

But even with her daughter far away down South, Ena can’t stop meddling in Vera’s life and hatches a plan that will could put paid to all of Vera’s hopes...will the two plucky Lancashire lasses come home to Coronation Street with their dreams intact, or is Ena about to shatter them forever?

What wonderful book great escape from these difficult times!!

I no longer watch Coronation Street… But I was a lover of the soap in the 70s and 80s while the characters in this book are reflective of when it first began I am very familiar with these characters and love them dearly this book is a fantastic escape from troubled times that we all experiencing to Mercia self in times gone by with no need to keep social distancing or where a mask oh what joy! The story is set in wartime is a wonderful warmest algebra feel and with excellent narration you are instantly transported back in time to what I call the real Coronation Street with great characters like Ena Sharples and many Caldwell and who can forget Elsie Tanner!

This book will go down very well with lovers of Coronation Street old and new there is lovely moments of humour sadness heartbreak and joy which we have all come to expect from Coronation Street. Don't be afraid to buy this book if you want to immerse yourself in a world that is free from the restrictions of today and in some ways enjoy the restrictions of yesteryear (wartime). I will be reading more in the series it was a wonderful book and actually had a very heartwarming message.

Dull as ditch water

It was boring, no depth to the story. no plot as would have been apt set in 1940's, apart from a couple of paragraphs about stolen silver. Narrator would have been better if had a Manchester accent, and the poor attempt at an Italian accent was, well, poor. On the plus side it helped me fall asleep at night.
