About this listen

Be twice as good as men and four times as good as white men.

Jia Khan has always lived like this.

A successful lawyer, her London life is a long way from the grubby Northern streets she knew as a child, where her father headed up the Pakistani community and ran the local organised crime syndicate. Often his Jirga rule - the old way - was violent and bloody, but it was always justice of a kind.

But now her father, Akbar Khan, has been murdered and Jia must return to take his place. In the past, the police relied on him to maintain the fragile order of the streets. But a power struggle has broken out amongst the various communities and now, nobody is safe.

Justice needs to be restored and Jia is about to discover that justice always comes at a price.

Amazing - family, blood, love.

A British Asian modern day mafia story - either all the complex emotions that family brings!

A Gripping story with a great finale

Very well written crime thriller steeped in Asian culture and the North. Intricately plotted with a fab twist I did not see coming. As with a lot of crime thrillers it also reminds us that very few humans are entire good or entirely bad.

Excellent book

Incredibly engaging and just wonderful! Really enjoyed the story and Mina Baker’s narration has brought it to life.

The Khan

I loved the plot, I was not expecting the ending. Brilliantly written, fantastic read. Need a sequel.

59 mins left but I can’t take anymore

It started well enough with interesting insights in to another culture, but the story? The narration? Both left me feeling like wading through treacle.
I am therefore disappointed, it offered much promise but miserably failed to deliver.
My biggest criticism is the overdramatised wordy dialogue, “ the metal jail door dragged over the bare concrete floor “
Or something as like, I can’t be bother to ensure my accuracy but needless to say I found the extra padding unnecessary and laborious.

Flowery poetry read in a northern accent

I think this was compulsive listening rather than enjoyable. A good storyline however the poetic feel to writing dragged it out. It was good but not one for my ‘listen again’ list.

Amazing

A completely immersive, and captivating story that is highly recommended, rich in detail but not overbearing in its approach.

The most sympathetic ice cold murderer

Original, racy writing. Fascinating characters. Deep insights into Yorkshire Muslim life. Compulsive plot. Read this book!

Inspiring female lead character

Really enjoyed this book. A unique story of a female crime boss and an interesting insight into her culture.

Dull predictable story

Almost gave up several times during the reading. I got to within 10 min of the end and through in the towel - not worth a credit.
