Summary

In September 1935, Dr Buck Ruxton strangled his wife, Isabella, whom he suspected of having an affair, in their Lancashire home while their three children slept in their beds. When the nanny, Mary Rogerson, disturbed him in the act, he killed her, too. To hide his crimes, he dismembered and chopped up the bodies, removing any distinguishing features, before he disposed of them in a ravine on the Scottish borders.

It took the genius of professors Sydney Smith and John Glaister, and their groundbreaking forensic techniques, to piece together the identities of the bodies. And when the finger of suspicion finally pointed at Ruxton, he acquired the services of the most famous lawyer in the land, Norman Birkett QC, who, against all the odds, had successfully defended the man accused of the Brighton Trunk Murders the previous year. Would he succeed this time?

In The Jigsaw Murders, journalist Jeremy Craddock tells the whole story of these gruesome killings for the first time. He brings to life the main characters, from the enigmatic and charismatic Ruxton, to his wife, Isabella, and Mary Rogerson - until now only seen as anonymous victims of a cruel crime - to the police officers, lawyers and scientists involved in this landmark case which led to the birth of modern forensics.

Riveting

I hadn’t been aware of this case previously so had no inkling how it would conclude. It was fascinating to learn of the forensic developments made in relation to the case, and the whole book was so meticulously researched that I felt I knew the people involved.
I have great sympathy for the families of the victims, and am pleased the book in no way glorifies the horrific crime.

A bit padded in the middle.!

It’s good and the “padding” does give context for later on, I think it could have been distributed more evenly throughout rather than an “info dump” in the middle.

Forensic Firsts

Superbly written, fact filled account of one of the most gruesome yet fascinating double murders of the 20th century. The investigation into the identification of the dissected body parts found under a remote borders bridge led to some forensic firsts, notably the first use of entomology in dating the time of death and the use of photographic superimposition to match a skull to a face. This account ties a sleepy Scots border town with a Northern industrial city and a declining seaside resort to unravel the sad mystery of who the body parts belonged to and to who put them in the gulley beneath the bridge

Excellent

This is a thoroughly researched and well written book which weaves in social history and personal insights in to the case. The narrator is excellent and the pitch and rhythm of the narration were just right. I am looking forward to finding out about the tv commission of the story.
