Summary

The Iliad and The Odyssey are epic poems traditionally attributed to Homer, of which the written versions are dated to the 8th century BCE. Chronicling events in the Greek Bronze Age, this magnificent pair of poems forms the cornerstone of Western literature.

If The Iliad is a classic war story, The Odyssey is symbolic of the individual’s journey through life. Achilles is the main hero of The Iliad which describes the final stage of the Trojan War, a conflict between a coalition of Greek city states and the city of Troy in Anatolia. The cause of the war was the kidnapping of Helen, wife of the King of Sparta, by the Trojan prince Paris.

Longer and more complex than The Iliad, The Odyssey deals with the struggle of the hero Odysseus to return home to his island of Ithaca after the war. He faces and escapes numerous perils on the voyage, like the spell of a nymph, an intoxicating plant, a one-eyed killer giant, a hideous sea monster and the deadly sirens whose songs lure sailors to death. When Odysseus finally gets back to Ithaca, he faces a further struggle to reclaim his home.

epic in true sense of the word

First read thse at school a long time ago.
Then years later when I had chance to visit Ithaca, I read the Odyssey again.
Now some further years later I have listened to both again.
I love the imagery that is created tho always thought that Homer had gone too far with everybody's lineage, even though they were only briefly part of the tale
.
Performance was very good but let down a little bit by the editing. There were a few moments where the performance was stopped for a correction and then restarted without being edited out. Also some brief none english phrases which I presumed were part of the performer's notes to be edited out or perhaps belonged to another language version.

Overall, did not spoil the enjoyment.

Now need to find a lighter book for my next listen.. 👍😀.

Ancient and engrossing

Getting used to the translation took far less time than I envisaged. Really enjoyed this.

Weirdly read

I found the way the reader read the stody rather weird. Weird way a pronouncing words and odd melody to the voice. This made it difficult to follow the story. It sounded a bit like the story was read by a machine.
