About this listen

At home, Richard Kuklinski was a dedicated suburban family man; on the street, he was the Iceman, a professional hit man and lethal scam artist, a man so heartless he kept one of his victims frozen for over two years to disguise the time of death. His personal body count was over 100, but the police couldn’t touch him. Then undercover agent Dominick Polifrone posed as a mobster and began a deadly game of cat and mouse.

The Iceman chronicles Kuklinski’s grisly career and exposes his murderous double life.

Anthony Bruno, a crime writer, is the author of 11 crime fiction novels and four books of nonfiction true crime. His nonfiction work The Seekers: A Bounty Hunter's Story, was nominated for an Edgar Award in 2001 for best fact crime book. His novel Bad Apple was adapted for television in 2004.

Critic reviews

" The Iceman chilleth! Not for the faint of heart but a rousing, riveting read. I read it in one (scary) gulp." (Jack Olson, author of I: The Creation of a Serial Killer)
"Bruno has done an excellent job of re-creating the tension and stress Polifrone experienced in fulfilling his risky undercover assignment." ( Publishers Weekly)
"Smoothly written…Bruno puts his writing talents to white-knuckle use with a tight focus on a killer with no human feelings except toward his wife and three sons…. A fast-paced, suspenseful re-creation of how a vicious killer was run to ground.” ( Kirkus Reviews)

Really enjoyable

This book was great.
The story was well written and well paced.
For me, the narrator made it though. He was brilliant.

Superbly written, brilliant narration

Amazed that this true story was available on the plus catalogue. Brilliantly written and superbly narrated I was so gripped I listened to the whole thing in one go.

This is a gem.

I got this it was free, the cover looks cheap I wasn’t expecting much.

The performance and the writing are excellent one of the best true crime books. I’ve seen the YouTube interviews with the killer and the narrator plays him perfectly. Absolutely brilliant vocal performance. I just wish he had done “the five families” which is like a sleeping tablet in audiobook form.

Gripping Story

I really enjoyed this book. I was expecting it to be a bit gory and grotesque - a guilty listen, perhaps - but it focuses more on the undercover investigation from the police perspective and was a gripping story, well told. The narration was a good choice, delivered fairly low key, flat, and creepy, which I felt was deliberately matched to Richard's personality.

Great

Great story of a monster who I guess stood little chance with his upbringing. No excuse and it’s hard to imagine how someone could kill so many without remorse for so long in fairly modern times. Hats off to the undercover cop who along with many other managed to get this guy. He must have had nerves of steel. Great book and narration.

Enjoyable, mostly true.

I liked the feel of this, reminded me of the Max Payne games. A gritty, noir style. This is certainly based on true events, although it is somewhat dramatised. There are parts that I definitely don’t believe are true but that is just part of the kuklinski story, he was a convicted killer but I think he greatly exaggerated the number of killings.

Fascinating

Very well read and scene setting with accompanying tension and an empathic sense of humanity for the victims is palpable throughout.
