Summary

Frank owns a service station on a little-used highway. His granddaughter, Allie, is sent to stay with him for the summer, but they don't talk a lot.

Simon is a dreamer and an idealist, in thrall to the romance of the open road and desperately in search of something.

Maggie is the woman who will bring them together, someone whose own personal journey will visit unimaginable terror on them all....

Critic reviews

"With echoes of Deliverance and Battle Royale, the Australian outback-set The Hunted is a truly terrifying, breathlessly exciting novel. It gut-punches you in the first few pages and doesn't let you recover until the final, thrilling climax. An extraordinary book." (M. W. Craven)

Exceptional slow burn thriller

While I am sure this is an excellent read, this is one of those examples of when an audiobook format really works. Great performance - you can really hear those voices. And Maggie is a terrific character. Enjoyed this one very much.

Have Crossed Australia off my Holiday List!

Enjoyed this-thought it did get a little too bloodthirsty towards the end & there was a bit too much going on but good overall. I did get a bit confused sometimes as to who was talking & whether it was past or present. An Australian Deliverance!

Enjoyed it

Enjoyed the story . The only negative is the jumps into different
Times and people so you need to listen out for characters

Hell yes!

Listened and bought the book. Totally loved it. Taut, tense, brutal but satisfying. One of the best listening of the year.

Story made for Netflix

Well plotted. Populated with interesting characters. Clearly visualised. Great pace. SUPERB narration. Possibly a little formulaic, but enough twists to keep you fully engaged.

Great story.

I enjoy this authors style of telling each players background and motivation. Descriptive to the point of having a clear idea of the lie of the land and characters. Plenty to keep you on edge. I purchased this after listening to the Hitchhiker. Great narrations in both. The narration makes or breaks the enjoyment of any story. An author to watch out for.

Not for the faint hearted!

Frank is living with his granddaughter, Allie, in a rundown roadhouse in the Australian Outback when an injured young woman stumbles in, pursued by a ruthless gang. What follows is not for the faint hearted!

This is a violent and disturbing book, full of nail-biting action and gore. It reminded me of the movies Wolf Creek and Deliverance. The villains are terrifying and I was holding my breath as they surrounded the roadhouse. When the action starts it is relentless and violent and barely left time for me to catch a breath. I felt myself cheering and rooting for Frank, Allie and Maggie, the injured woman. I loved the descriptions of the Australian Outback and the sense of isolation, knowing there was no one coming to help.

I believe that this book is going to be made into a movie. I'm not sure I'd dare watch!
