Summary

Now a hit Netflix miniseries directed by Mike Flanagan and starring Michiel Huisman, Carla Gugino, and Timothy Hutton

Past the rusted gates and untrimmed hedges, Hill House broods and waits.

Four seekers have come to the ugly, abandoned old mansion: Dr. Montague, an occult scholar looking for solid evidence of the psychic phenomenon called haunting; Theodora, his lovely and lighthearted assistant; Eleanor, a lonely, homeless girl well acquainted with poltergeists; and Luke, the adventurous future heir of Hill House. At first, their stay seems destined to be merely a spooky encounter with inexplicable noises and self-closing doors, but Hill House is gathering its powers and will soon choose one of them to make its own.

This classic horror novel has been hailed as a perfect work of unnerving terror.

Spooky yet thought provoking

The scariest monsters are those you don't see explicitly, and imagine in your own head. This book lets you do that brilliantly and leaves you with a satisfied feeling at the end, although probably not the end you were predicting. The characters work well as a small but varied bunch with little in common, exploring the house and its mysteries. I liked the slow, but not too slow, increasing feeling of unease, and wondering what the nest escalation will be. If you like ghost or supernatural stories at all, then this is a must for your library.

Good atmosphere and an interesting idea for the house.

It was okay, a little spooky but not as scary as I would have imagined. more sad than anything.

The Haunting Of Hill House.

“Am I walking toward something I should be running away from?”

I picked this up after seeing the tv series advertised on Netflix. I wanted to read/listen to the book first. Was currently reading this book, when I seen the audio book on offer!

It was an okay read, it was a little scary. A couple of parts did give me a little chill.

However, it didn’t really satisfy me.

Not a classic, sorry

I know that Shirley Jackson came before Barker, Herbert and King but her story telling here is just so bloated and dull. Starts off well, but then just goes on and on with the same thread and just trickles out at the end. A group of new characters are introduced mid-way and you think oh great but nothing much comes of this. Perhaps this is the benchmark for modern ghost strory or horrow fiction but why did it have to be so dull?

The best kind of spooky

It took me time to get round to reading this, mostly as I was worried it wouldn’t match the hype. Also, I thought it might have an outdated stance on what’s scary.

I could not have been more wrong.

This was spooky in the best way. It is subtle and unnerving and based in very human insecurity. The narrative tilted me in one direction then another, leaving me unsteady and unsure of characters’ intentions.

Bernadette Dunne did a mainly good job of portraying different characters. I loved her Mrs Montague in particular.

Nothing happens

Not scary, nothing happens, I enjoyed the reader voice by the end but took some getting used to at first

A classic that still reads well today

I loved this book, and the reading of it was splendid. I was surprised that although the book offers a lot of horror, it was overarching in its themes of family, friendship and loneliness. There were slow parts here and there but it is still worth a listen all these years later.
