Summary

The Haunting of Briarwych Church is a horror story about a dead woman's anger and about a terrible quest for revenge.

The year is 1942. Britain is in the grip of the Second World War, bringing blackout conditions to much of the country.

For several years, Briarwych Church has remained locked and unused. Arriving to take up his new position, Father Lionel Loveford's first task is to open the great wooden door and get the church back into use. But something lurks in the shadows.

A terrible tragedy once took place in Briarwych, and now the locals live in fear of a vengeful spirit that has sometimes been spotted looking out from the church's windows. Although he doesn't believe in ghosts, Father Loveford soon discovers that the entire village of Blackwych lives in a perpetual state of guilt and terror.

Does the ghost of Judith Prendergast really haunt the church, and, if so, what does she want from the villagers?

Overall experience

Good story. Not too scary and ending in hope for the future. Will look for the sequels .

Good

This is a decent ghost story set years ago and written in the old style but that suits it.

Fantastic story line

Great story line from the outset, once started, it was difficult to stop listening until the end! Well read and very easy to imagine the characters and places within the storyline.

Will definitely listen to this one again and will look for other titles from this author.

A good listen

I enjoyed listening to this, the narration was great which always helps hugely, and the spey was good, not scary, nor great but good enough for me to listen in a couple of sittings. I listen to a lot of books, with my entrainment coming from these rather than tv and movies etc, and there are very many books I've stayed and not finished, as I just get bored with the book or just feel like listening to something else. So I always have to give good credit to those which keep me listening and coming back for more at soon as in able.

It's quite a simple story, a nice easy listen as you take a break from the epic novels with 70 characters to keep tall of. It's about a peristaltic who takes over the running of a haunted church. Set during world war two, of which it weaves in and out of the story nicely. It ends well, which is too often badly done in this genre imo. The only negative I have, is that it does a couple of time jumps between chapters at the wrong moments, or has you hooked on what's going on and suddenly the chapter ends and it's 6 weeks later. I wish it was a longer book covering it all without jumps. That said they're far from show stopping, if anything it shows it's a good listen of you wish for more of it... and thankfully there are two more books in the series. Fingers crossed the narration is just a good!

The twist.

I felt that it lost its way a little, although, a good story with a bit of a twist.

Interesting Characters

i didn't necessarily like everything about the main character. But his flaws really only made the story more interesting, for the most part.

If you like classic spooky stories, this one is pretty great.

A Haunting Story!

J loved this story!. Any Cross always writes excellent stories and this is no exception!. After the church has been shut for two years, a new Vicar is sent to get the congregation back into church.Christopher Weeks narrates it so well that the story comes alive!. Highly recommend this book and I shall be reading the next two in this series about Briarwych Church!.

A good short read

The narrator makes this story, I think it’s a perfect match. It was a good short read, I enjoyed it and would recommend.
