Story
Misery Chastain was dead. Paul Sheldon had just killed her - with relief, with joy. Misery had made him rich; she was the heroine of a string of best sellers. And now he wanted to get on to some real writing. That's when the car accident happened, and he woke up in pain in a strange bed. But it wasn't the hospital. Annie Wilkes had pulled him from the wreck, brought him to her remote mountain home, splinted and set his mangled legs. The good news was that Annie was a nurse and had painkilling drugs. The bad news was that she was Paul's Number One Fan.

The house looked right, felt right to Dr Louis Creed. Rambling, old, unsmart and comfortable. A place where the family could settle, the children grow and play and explore. The rolling hills and meadows of Maine seemed a world away from the fume-choked dangers of Chicago. Only the occasional big truck out on the two-lane highway, grinding up through the gears, hammering down the long gradients, growled out an intrusive threat. But behind the house and far away from the road: that was safe.

Suspenseful, frightening, and sometimes howlingly funny, a story of invasion and battle, survival and heroism. It is a story of how men remember ... and how they love. In Derry, Maine, four young boys once stood together and did a brave thing. Something that changed them in ways they hardly understand. A quarter of a century later, the boys are men who have gone their separate ways. Though they still get together once a year, to go hunting in the north woods of Maine.

Everything is familiar. But everything has changed. Coming back to the little community is like walking into a nightmare for Jim Gardener, poet, drunk, potential suicide. It all looks the same: the house; the furniture; Jim's friend, Bobbi; her beagle (though ageing); even the woods out at the back. But it was in the woods that Bobbi stumbled over the odd, part-buried object and felt a peculiar tingle as she brushed the soft earth away. Everything is familiar. But everything is about to change.

But good or evil, innocent or guilty, none has ever seen the brutal likes of the new prisoner, John Coffey, sentenced to death for raping and murdering two young girls. Is Coffey a devil in human form? Or is he a far, far different kind of being?

An incredible story, incredibly told.
The Green Mile is one of my all time favourite books. It's not easy to pin down to a genre - it's more an insight in to the highs and lows of human nature than a horror or paranormal fiction title. It?s six part, episodic structure only adds to its appeal, giving each part a tension and sense of expectation that makes reading or listening to the next part a must rather than an option. Despite the fact that, when you download the recording, you?re effectively getting all the episodes at once with no significant pause in between them, the way in which King links each part together somehow preserves this feeling, which only adds to the enjoyment. The feeling of needing to know what happens next is more or less constant throughout.
For me though, it?s Frank Muller?s incredible reading that makes this download really exceptional. Frank Muller and Stephen King are a incredibly potent mix ? Muller has an ability to absorb the minutia of each character and bring them to life with an ease that?s almost eerie, especially in first person, narrator driven stories like this, or the Shawshank Redemption. I understand that Muller won several awards for his performance in this recording ? listen to it for half an hour and I guarantee that you?ll see why. As King himself says '[When Frank reads], the blind will see, the lame will walk, and the deaf will hear.'
If you enjoy this reading, I highly recommend the Shawshank Redemption, The Talisman, and Black House (also on Audible) ? all of these are powerfully read Stephen King stories (the last two being co-written with Peter Straub) with Muller as narrator.
Muller is unfortunately now deceased, and was unable to make new recordings since 2001 following a motorbike accident ? somehow, that knowledge only makes this brilliant, haunting narrative all the more poignant. There will never be another like it. Treasure it.

Excellent story & superbly narrated
Stephen King's books adapt really well to audio. I love the conversational style of his writing and unlike with a book, you have to go at the narrator's pace - no skipping ahead or skimming - and so you really get to appreciate the build up of tension and the twists and turns of the story. This is, in my view, one of King's best books, a genuinely excellent novel with a terrific story, great and very convincing atmosphere and a well drawn cast of three dimensional characters.
Frank Muller narrates the book brilliantly. He has a fantastic sense of pace and timing; distinguishes the characters superbly and he captures Stephen King's conversational style just right.
Strongly recommended - a real five star listen.

How good was this audiobook? Well, I often work late and so drive home at night. This book made me sit out in my car after I had reached my home at 3:30am, because I just had to listen to the next bit. This was everything an audiobook should be. A fantastic piece of fiction, improved by being brilliantly interpreted. All of the characters leapt from my car stereo, and the whole thing transported me to a different place. Magical.

The Best way to read this wonderful story
The Green Mile is a story that is largely based in the real world but at its heart is a supernatural twist. The genious of King's writing is in his ability to get you to care so much about the characters and the story that you are more than willing to accept the supernatural element as if it were fact.
It's basically just good old fashioned story telling where you are hooked after chapter 1 and you just want to keep on listening. The story tugs at your emotions (almost yanking them off by the end of the book) but that is purely because you get emotionally involved in the situation, the characters and their plight.
It's also a story that examines human nature and what I loved especially is that the listener is left to determine the good and the bad in them, irrespective of their circumstances and history.
Frank Muller reads The Green Mile perfectly and I challenge anyone who has previously read the book to listen to this version and not agree that it is an improvement over your own "inner voice".
Simply put, 2 professionals at work make one fine piece of entertainment. I've listened to it 4 times now.

Powerfully Moving
There are few films which leave an indelible mark on you and one of those is King's The Green Mile. I remember watching this with my wife and choking up at the sheer power of this amazing and soulful tale and so I decided to get the audio book and I am pleased to say was just as blown away.
Having now read the book, I can understand why the movie version was so great. Unlike many book to movie conversions, The Green Mile didn't suffer from huge editing which left only a fraction of the story compared to the book. Sure, the book does provide us with extra detail which all works superbly. What brings this book to life is the fantastic narration. A good book can be sunk by a poor or unpleasant sounding narrator and I am sorry to say that there were some other King books I'd have liked to listen to but for the irritating drone of the narrator used. The Green Mile is that perfect marriage of powerful story with excellent narrator and it's a shame this narrator wasn't used to voice many other King novels.
Having just finished Christine which I was sadly disappointed with, The Green Mile delivers everything you'd come to expect from a Stephen King novel. The aforementioned Christine and this book are about the same length and yet I found The Green Mile just flew by while I found Christine a labour of love to get through.
There has only been one other book I've listened to on Audible that has made me well up and so this ability to move the reader by such a powerful story is rare indeed - well for a man if that doesn't sound too sexist. Just recounting some of the story and the things the characters did made me well up all over again as I told my wife. perhaps I'm too much of a softy but the power of this beautifully crafted story will touch your heart in that rare way that the best stories can.
I dare you to not love this wonderful story and have it leave you thinking about it for a long time afterward.

An absolutely brilliant listen
I have picked up many Stephen King audio books when at a loss what to listen to next, purely because I know he is a master storyteller and all of his books seem to translate perfectly to audio. I was not disappointed when I came upon The Green Mile.
From start to finish this title is full to the brim with characters so lovingly written and fleshed out that you can't help but care for, or hate, them as if they were real people. Even the people on Death Row become lovable to the extent that you are willing to forgive them their horrible crimes and wish they didn't have to sit in the electric chair.
I honestly cannot speak highly enough of this book. It genuinely had me wanting to call in sick to work just so I could listen some more. The narration is perfect. I couldn't imagine any other voice for any of the characters fitting quite so well as they did in this audio book.
This truly is a must for any fan of Stephen King. Well worth the price it costs and certainly worth a credit.

This is exceptional, combine the talent of Stephen King with the vocal reading of Frank Muller and you've got a winner. The story is strangely charming but has the intensity in places that Stephen King is famous for. I haven't seen the film but if it's half as good as the book I'm looking forward to tracking it down at the weekend.

One of the best..do yourself a favour!
Great story, great listen, beautifully read. This is a moving story that will transport you and transfix you. Stephen King is at his peak here, in non horror/pure storytelling mode, and I don't think there are any novelists who can better his ability to capture a scene, a moment, a sound or a feeling like he can. I've read the book, seen the movie and now listened to the book and enjoyed every moment of all of them.

Great movie - but the book is even better
Would you listen to The Green Mile again? Why?
For all those that have enjoyed the film more than once - this book is for you. Frank Muller is a perfect match for this wonderful book by Stephen King, and the book and more dimensions than the film.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Green Mile?
The ending in the book is much more powerful than the ending in the film (if you can believe that).
Have you listened to any of Frank Muller???s other performances before? How does this one compare?
This is one of Frank Muller's finest performances. His voice is a perfect fit for this book.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes - except that it is too long - and it was written in episodes, so reading it in one sitting is not how Stephen King meant it to be read (or listened to).
Any additional comments?
This is Audible at its best.
