Summary
The bestselling author of The Designer presents a sweeping story of blind faith, family allegiance and how love makes one man question everything he thought he knew.
Max Wolff is a committed soldier of the Reich. So when he is sent home wounded, only to discover that his mother is sheltering two young Jewish women in their home, he is outraged.
His mother’s act of mercy is a gross betrayal of everything Max stands for. He has dedicated his life to Nazism, fighting to atone for the shame of his anti-Hitler father’s imprisonment. It’s his duty to turn the sisters over to the Gestapo. But he hesitates, and the longer Max fails to do his duty, the harder it becomes.
When Allied bombers fill the skies of Germany, Max is forced to abandon all dogma and face the brutality of war in order to defend precious lives. But what will it cost him?

Very Real
A beautiful listen, the narrator brings to life the depths and layers of each character so well, I felt quite moved by some of the experiences.
I especially like how very real the whole story is.
Five stars from me

Absolutely brilliant
This had me hooked from start to finish. I’ve read a lot of ww2 novels but I think this is the first I’ve read which delves into wartime Germany from a non-Jewish German’s perspective, as in the case of Magda and Max… a beautiful but tragic tale, with Jewish Lola’s heart wrenchingly sad story told beautifully, and which was narrated masterfully. I don’t think I’ve ever really realised the dreadful effect of the Dresden bombings and the final months of battle on ‘normal Germans’. Highly recommend this book

Good story but dreadful narration
The story is interesting, harrowing, evocative. The narration, and in particular the German accents, are atrocious - I have many English speaking German relatives and friends and they definitely don't sound like this!

Gripping from the start
So wonderfully written and narrated. I was hooked from the start. The characters were so real. The war through the eyes of a German and a Jew was very inciting.

A superb book
Beautifully written and read. Poignant, sad, historically so informative. I thought I knew this chapter of history but found enormous gaps that this book filled whilst giving a story that was so needed to be told.

Generally good
A good story with generally good narration. Only concern was the poor accents and intonation, which switched between a poor German and Indian.

impact of The War in Germany on Germans
This novel is about wartime experience of several germans during WW2. i thought it would focus more on the story of the girls in the attic. Rather the focus was wartime events and suffering. i found the author to be extremely repetitive with the events, the descriptions, and circumstances.

Girls in the attic what a story.
It was a gripping story of loss, love, and war. How could a young woman serve world war 1 if she was a Jew. This story was a page turner. It keep me on my toes the whole way threw.

Hard to Believem
Girls In the Attic fell short of the other books I have listened to by this author. The characters were poorly developed, hard to believe. The dialog between the Decorated SS officer & the discovered Jews was so implausible- it read more like a sappy romance than a serious historical novel. I was disappointed in this book.

An interesting story of WW2
This story is told from the perspective of a young Jewish girl who is hidden from the Nazi's. She travels through Germany with a young Panzer officer at the end of the war. Interesting.
