Summary
Here is the first instalment of the Millennium Trilogy - which has sold more than five million print copies worldwide.
The Industrialist
Henrik Vanger, head of the dynastic Vanger Corporation, is tormented by the loss of a child decades earlier and convinced that a member of his family has committed murder.
The Journalist
Mikael Blomkvist delves deep into the Vangers' history to uncover the truth. But someone else wants the past to remain a secret and will go to any lengths to keep it that way.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Lisbeth Salander, the delinquent and dangerous security specialist, assists in the investigation. A genius computer hacker, she tolerates no restrictions placed upon her by individuals, society, or the law.
Translated by Reg Keeland.
Critic reviews
"An utterly fresh political and journalistic thriller that is also intimate and moral. In spite of its dark unearthings Stieg Larsson has written a feast of a book, with central characters you will not forget." (Michael Ondaatje)
"A REALLY meaty Nordic thriller." ( Daily Mail)
"This is part one of a trilogy that threatens to knock Henning Mankell off his crime writer's throne." ( The Guardian)

Unputdownable!
I live in France where everyone seems to be reading Stieg Larsson's Trilogy on the metro, so I jumped at the chance of listening to this book (the first in the series) in English - and I can now understand why everyone is so excited about this work!
The two 'heros'of the story, journalist Mickael Blomkvist and very quirky private investigator Lisbeth Salander are brought together to solve a murder where the body has never been found. In order to do so, they delve into the closed world of a remote Swedish island, where the majority of the inhabitants are members of the privileged industrialit Vanger family...
The author has managed to give the characters depth with few brushstrokes, build suspense and convey the atmosphere of a remote nordic village. This is very largely brought to life by Martin Wenner's excellent reading.
As an avid listener/reader of crime novels, it is a pleasure to hear one written and set in Sweden. It is not often that Scandinavian crime authors get translated into English - a great shame if 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' is anything to go by. When can we expect Stieg Larsson's next two books in the series on Audible? Please make it VERY SOON.

Millennium part 1
This is the first part of what I hope will be an excellent triology. Mikael Blomkvist, a journalist who is found guilty of slander, is persuaded to take on a job for Henrik Vanger a powerful industrialist. His cover is to write the story of the company, but more importantly Vanger wants him to find out who killed his granddaughter who disappeared 40 years previously. It is a cold trail set in a cold Swedish winter.
Investigating the rich and powerful members of this large and rather poisonous family brings trouble as well as a smart surveillance agent, Lisbeth Salander, into Blomkvist's investigation.
An interesting, well-told and well-read story with its nail- biting moments, makes this author an excellent discovery. Not to be missed in its own right, this book sets a high standard for the rest of the trilogy, whenever the other books are publish.

Gripping stuff - a well narrated audiobook.
My wife and I listened to this over the course of a week or two in the evenngs. We both really enjoyed it and I was so gripped by the story, I stayed up nearly all of one night to hear the ending. My wife then had to catch up during the day whilst I then suffered from lack of sleep!
I picked up this abridged version in error, as I prefer unabridged versions of books - I don't like to feel that I'm missing something the author felt was important enough to include. Having said that, I didn't realise until I went back online to download the next in the series, which shows they've done a good job. On reflection, it was quite pacey, which wasn't a bad thing.
The narrator was excellent and immersed us both in the world of the book. He was unintrusive and handled the characterisations very well indeed.
The story has some quite disturbing violent and sexual scenes, they are integral to the story and not gratuitous, but if you're easily offended it might not be suitable. Such scenes didn't offend us, but it did make us think 'wierd!'.
Well worth the Audible credit. I've downloaded both of the next books in the series, this time unabridged, and I think the same narrator.

I was not sure I would enjoy this book but am so glad I purchased it. The book and the narrator were superb. I felt intrigued by all the characters and any interruptions like work, eating or sleeping were very annoying! I also felt that any other downloaded books might be disappointing after listening to this. I have downloaded the second in the trilogy and cannot wait.

Lisbeth Salander sounds like a London taxi driver
Love this story but WHAT WAS THE NARRATOR THINKING??? Lisbeth sounds like a black cab driver, cockney and male. Just can't understand why he chose this voice. Or indeed why they chose a male to narrate this novel. I listened to it through gritted teeth, although I love this story having read the books and seen the movies.

not good narration
After listening to The Girl Who Takes an Eye for an Eye which I throughly enjoyed, I looked forward to this audible. Well, that's as good as it gets.
The narrator was tedious and bland to listen too (sorry). After only a short time, the sentences seemed to merge together and I continually lost the plot.
It was so bad, after 55 minutes into the first chapter I had restart from the begining.
5 minutes into the chapter I gave up. This is only the second time I have done such and consequently, I will not be purchasing the following two audible books of the 'Millennium' trilogy.
I have given a neutral star for the story, which may be amazing but as I have not fully listened I could not truly comment.
