About this listen
“A poignant, tender story of families and sisters divided by the cruelty of political chance–my heart ached for them on every page." Kate Quinn, New York Times bestselling author of The Alice Network
*contains exclusive audio content*
A city divided.
When the Berlin Wall goes up, Karin is on the wrong side of the city. Overnight, she’s trapped under Soviet rule in unforgiving East Berlin and separated from her twin sister, Jutta.
Two sisters torn apart.
Karin and Jutta lead parallel lives for years, cut off by the Wall. But Karin finds one reason to keep going: Otto, the man who gives her hope, even amidst the brutal East German regime.
One impossible choice…
When Jutta finds a hidden way through the wall, the twins are reunited. But the Stasi have eyes everywhere, and soon Karin is faced with a terrible decision: to flee to the West and be with her sister, or sacrifice it all to follow her heart?
From the USA Today and internationally bestselling WWII novelist of The German Midwife, The Secret Messenger and The Berlin Girl comes a story set at the dawn of the Cold War in Berlin.

Great listen.
I really enjoyed this book and it held my interest throughout. A thrilling end kept me awake into the early hours and it was a lovely touch to have the author speak at the end. Well researched this book brings history alive. The narrators do a great job. Thank you for a brilliant audio book.

Poor Storyline
Having read Mandy Robotham's previous novels l expected a decent story this was poor The dreaded wall must have been awful to live and navigate post war Germany especially with diverse culture balance but surely the atrocities that occurred by Germany was the instigator of the troubles I had empath for the individuals but the whole picture was so much more Lame story

Too slow.
I was very excited to start this book as I love historical novels and the premise was promising. However, 3 hours in and it just didn’t get going so gave up in the end.

An enjoyable read and listen
This book is set between primarily between 1961 and 1963 and sees the unexpected separation of Karin and Jutta, twin sisters living in West Berlin. However, Karin finds herself in a hospital in East Berlin the night the Berlin Wall goes up and her request to return home to her family, once she is well enough, is repeatedly refused. There follows a story of secrets visits between the sisters and we gain an insight into the lives of people living on either side of the wall.
This is my first read/listen by this author and it was an enjoyable read but I wouldn’t say I loved it.
I mixed the hard copy with audio and whilst the audio was good, I felt the narrators, especially Jutta’s, had “too old” a voice for the characters.
