Critic reviews

'Alderman has crafted characters readers will want to follow wherever they go—even to the end of the world. A smart, engrossing fable about digital technology and human community' Kirkus Starred Review

'The endless intrigue and surprising twists keep the pages turning' Publishers Weekly

'Playful, incisive, horribly relevant and surprisingly hopeful, The Future is a thrill ride that’s also a powerful manifesto hurtling towards a world where everything might turn out to be okay. A little Atwood, a little Gibson, all Alderman, it’s brilliant and I loved it' Lauren Beukes, New York Times bestselling author of The Shining Girls

Entertaining eco/ apocalyptic caper

I actually quite liked it - the narration is excellent. The mix of voices and sound effects works - it’s way more engaging & easier to follow.

There’s been mixed reviews for this book so far but I thought it was an interesting concept with some good twists and a satisfying end.

It’s ridiculously far fetched, and is too obviously based on real life tech brands but if you can look past this it’s a pretty entertaining listen!

Not great

This definitely was not my favourite Naomi alderman book. I spent a lot of time waiting for this book to get to the point. I found it predictable at times and overall I thought it would be more interesting than what it ended up being. Stick The Power and The Lessons if you want a better read by the same author

Love love love this book… IF ONLY….

Naomi does a wonderful job of keeping the reader engaged on every entry page, with a twisting and calculated plot. The characters are almost recognisable with parallels that run scarily close to our current time! I added the “if only” because the ending is soo what could be, but again with an additional twist that leaves you thinking and pondering The future…

Highly plausible

Liked the strong female characters. Tech aspects were well researched. Plenty of interesting characters weaved into the story. Reader also did a great job.

Couldn’t switch it off! Soooooo good!

Brilliant story. I listened looking for plot holes, each time I thought I found one, there was another brilliant twist.
This needs to be a big budget TV series. A movie would not do this story justice!

Interesting, amusing and clever twists

Really interesting story that developed at a good pace, placed in a very believable near future. Both thought provoking and entertaining.

Extremely banale

Kept waiting for something not so banale and boring to happen but never got to that point, sadly. I feel like I have been preached by a righteous 12 year old, inspired by Greta Thunberg... But then again, maybe this is for children, or teenagers, and I got it by accident... I really need to be more careful choosing. Audio quality... Not too bad, but I don't like multiple readers partially acting. I find it distracting.

Witty and hopeful

Surprised myself by finding the smuggled theology more compelling than I’d have expected! Trade mark Naomi Alderman hopefulness and messaging around community, cooperation and coming together to face challenges. Interested to see what she does next.
