About this listen

Finalist for the 2014 Phillip K. Dick Award

Elizabeth Barnabus lives a double life - as herself and as her brother, the private detective. She is trying to solve the mystery of a disappearing aristocrat and a hoard of arcane machines. In her way stand the rogues, freaks, and self-proclaimed alchemists of a travelling circus.

But when she comes up against an agent of the all-powerful Patent Office, her life and the course of history will begin to change. And not necessarily for the better....

Terrific finale to the story of Elizabeth Barnabus

It’s difficult to write much about the story without revealing massive spoilers! Suffice it to say, Elizabeth is back where she belongs, in the thick of the action, of which there is plenty. Some ingenious plotting and, as always with Rod Duncan, skilful and thoughtful writing which, along with breathtaking action sequences, offers some reflective passages about love, friendship and loyalty. Grand storytelling which I thoroughly enjoyed.
Please don’t let this put you off listening, but I had some issues with the narration and felt that in too many instances, emphasis was misplaced, sometimes to the extent that I had to listen again to a sentence to make sense of it, and on other occasions, it was a minor irritation which spoilt the narrative flow. I know Rod takes great care in the construction of his writing, so feel that the narration lets him down somewhat, because otherwise I would have given 5 stars overall.

Solid ending to the series

Having listened to all 6 books in the series, in my view the quality is consistent. The characters are not brilliantly portrayed but they are real enough, the narration is good and the story is interesting without any of the cringe-moments that (for me) make most fantasy fiction unbearable.

the first three books in the Elizabeth barnabus series was soo good but this one is just lacking. I no longer care about her character and adventure is boring. shame
