Story
This is a story from the Fall of the House of Usher collection. The horrors of the Spanish Inquisition, with its dungeon of death, and the overhanging gloom on the House of Usher demonstrate unforgettably the unique imagination of Edgar Allan Poe. Unerringly, he touches upon some of our greatest nightmares: Premature burial, ghostly transformation, words from beyond the grave. Written in the 1840s, they have retained their power to shock and frighten even now.

Story
Edgar Allan Poe elevated the gothic story, developed the unreliable narrator, recast psychological terror, and reveled in both the horror and the supernal beauty of death. From Poe's rich, unrivaled imagination comes a collection of his most masterful works, including "The Black Cat", "The Fall of the House of Usher", and, of course, "The Tell-Tale Heart". Each story explores morbid themes of grief, greed, fear, and guilt, and together they embody Poe's grotesque obsessions...even the dread of being buried alive.

Ok I’m a little creeped out now.
This is one of Poe’s more haunting works. It is very subtle and full of symbolism. I listened to it three times and then had to go to YouTube and watch a video version and I still think I’ve only begun to grasp why is going on in this story. It is beyond your typical haunted house tale in that the occupants are still alive (some maybe more than others) and the haunting is of the mind and soul more than merely seeing apparitions. Told from the perspective of a visitor to the house, the pain and sorrow evident in the family and soaked into the very walls of the house unfolds as the descent into madness of the last living male heir of the Usher’s lays his sister to rest in the family tomb. As the bloodline falls, so does the house and almost everything and everyone within it. Very well read in the original prose by one of my favourite narrators, with the addition of sounds to enhance the listening experience. I am going to now have to watch a film and maybe a few more items then I’ll come back and listen yet again! I get something new each time I listen. Highly recommended is you love classics, Poe and maybe a few nightmares!

Best Read on a Stormy Night in Surround Sound
This reminded me of something I long forgotten; records of Poe’s stories from my early education, and I loved every second of it. When the story is right, I have come to truly appreciate the enhanced versions with extra creaks and moans. Those that frequent my reviews will recall me mentioning that another narrator practically made a character out of a door just from the added effects. This was no different.
I do not recall reading this story after listening to it this time. I’m sure I must have read it at some point as I love all things Poe. I think that is more a testament as to how much a story can change depending on the way it is presented. This story (as well as most of Poe’s work I’d imagine) lends itself very well to the added effects, especially since part of the story revolves around that very issue. Mr. Theis has done a marvelous job bringing Poe’s work to life. I can’t wait to hear more.
I was provided with a free copy of this audio book for my honest review. The views expressed here are entirely my own.

Classic story with a great narrator
As far as Poe goes this is one of his less elaborate and more straight forward suspense stories. For those who have a hard time getting into his stories this one is perfect to start out with. There is extensive analysis done on Poe so I will leave you with one thought, as a person who thinks Poe and Hubbard are overrated I do enjoy this story.
Kevin really rocks this story. He has the perfect old timey voice and cadence and I could picture people listening to this sitting around the radio. He really keeps the story going and I would be more inclined to listen to more Poe if Kevin continues to voice them. He definitely is a narrator I'm going to have to listen to more of.

Elegant, effective
A first-rate version of Poe at his creepiest (well, there’s “Annabel Lee,” but I digress). I’m not usually fond of audio-enhanced books, but this is an exception—the enhancements actually enhance. This story is all about atmosphere, and the music and sound effects provide strong support for Kevin Theis’s surefooted narration; bonus, they carry us smoothly past now-obscure names of artists and thinkers we might otherwise stumble over. Well done, Fort Raphael Publishing (from whom I requested a review copy).

😱Narration Fall👎
Great movie, but this book not so awesome to be honest.
If there were a different narrator for Edgar's story, then perhaps I could have and would have enjoyed listening to this short story.🙉😬
I just could NOT AT ALL keep listening without cringing with every single word. What did I really expect for free?🙄😬 A narrator, that I could at the very least would grow on me at least a 🤏 bit.
Sorry, but the story I give a ⭐⭐⭐ (as Poe has WAY BETTER).🧐
Kevin gets, ⭐ as the narrator. 😪 I believe he could be much better with a different kind of story/subject/genre perhaps.
