In the second volume of his landmark First World War trilogy, Professor Nick Lloyd tells the story for the first time of what Winston Churchill once called the 'unknown war': the vast conflict in Eastern Europe and the Balkans that brought about the collapse of three empires.

Much has been written about the fighting in France and Belgium, yet the Eastern Front was no less bloody. Between 1914 and 1917, huge numbers of people - perhaps as many as 16 million soldiers and two million civilians - were killed, wounded or maimed in enormous battles that sometimes ranged across a front of 100 km in length.

Through intimate eyewitness reports, diary entries and memoirs - many of which have never been translated into English before - Lloyd reconstructs the full story of a war that began in the Balkans as a local struggle between Austria-Hungary and Serbia, and which sucked in Russia, Germany and Italy, right through to the final collapse of the Habsburg Empire in 1918.

Very interesting but missing a section

Problem with this audiobook: Chapter 22 ends halfway through a sentence on page 460 of the hardback and skips 15 pages to begin chapter 23.

Sheds a light on a lesser known front of WW1

Having read and listened the first volume of this trilogy, I pre ordered The Eastern Front with excitement. It didn't disappoint. The book covers the Eastern Front and the Italian campaign as well as other battles, which are ( To Western readers at least) theaters of war which are far lesser known than the Western Front. The content and narration is fantastic and keeps a good pace throughout. If you enjoyed the Western Front don't think twice about getting this. There is a technical issue with one of the last chapters cutting off however I have reported this to Audible so this review is left in the hope and with the score that it will be rectified for future listeners

Very good but missing large sections near the end.

I found a large chunk missing in Chapter 21 around after 15:00 when it skips around 40 minutes and jumps to Chapter 22.

Then everything from the start of Chapter 23 up to the end is also missing.

I will ask for a refund.
